What's good guys, and the latest Sabine episode broke my heart, it really did. So WATCH IT BEFORE YOU READ THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! FINAL WARNING!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Anyways. Since we didn't get to see them hug and say goodbye (Filoni, seriously?! We all know they did) here's a fic of them talking over the holonet and quite regulary, I might add. Because again, we all know that would be canon. I hope y'all enjoy this, because it made ME feel better and she's gonna come back so don't be too sad lmaoooo. R&R as always, tell me what you think and here we gooooo!
If you peered into the nose gun one blistering night on Attlon, you could see what appeared to be a skinny, blue-haired boy calling up a purple-haired girl with Mandalorian armour on a hologram, and trying hard to amuse her. Ezra felt the difference with Sabine gone, like a lightsaber to the chest - not that he knew what that felt like. Maybe not too different to a lightsaber to the face, which he did indeed know how that felt. She was the only one his age, the only one who with just a few words could make him feel warm inside, the only one who painted his helmets and teased him and make his heart spring out of his chest and perform somersaults in the air. And so calling her up was the next best thing, as he recounted their latest adventure.
"And then I said - listen to this - 'Commandant Lyste at your service,'" Ezra imitated in his worst Imperial accent possible, and Sabine couldn't fight back the laugh that escaped her throat.
"That was so bad I cannot believe they fell for it!" she exclaimed. Ezra smiled smugly.
"Well, the Force helped a little - but it was all my amazing acting, I'm telling you."
Something clenched in Sabine's heart, and not for the first time she wished they were face to face, not worlds apart.
"Wish I could have seen it in person," she muttered, and Ezra's gaze clouded over just a little.
"Aw, I'll just get Chop to record it for you, I won't even need to use a mind trick next time."
She scoffed. "Right. Sure."
Ezra changed the subject. "So, how's Krownest? And, uh, your mom and brother? Also Fenn Rau?"
Sabine crossed her arms. "I mean... what did I expect? It's cold, and the weather is bad - and they're not exactly... used to having me around. Fenn is alright, but Mandalorians - aren't the best at family."
Ezra chided her, "Don't say that." He didn't want to add, 'You have us,' didn't want to raise tension between them. Or that dreaded question - if she was coming back. If.
Sabine stole the words out of his mouth. "Well, I have more than one family now. 2, to be precise."
"Naw, I think Zeb makes that 3," Ezra snarked, and they both laughed it off. Sabine wrinkled her nose a little.
"I'm not sure Tristan likes you very much though."
Ezra feigned hurt. "What? Is it the new muscle? He scared of these babies?"
Sabine proceeded to roll her eyes. "More like the smell," which earned her a 'Hey!' of protest. Ezra clicked his teeth, "I thought you liked my smell?"
The Mandalorian smirked, "Who told you that?"
Ezra went to push her shoulder, only remembering at the last second that she wasn't there. It was a hologram, blue and faded and wispy. Like a mirage. Or a sort of... electric dream. Cheesy, yes, but Ezra didn't care. It wasn't the same.
Sabine seemed to sense this, because she spoke, "I hope you aren't taking the chance to sneak into my room, Bridger, because you know I'll kick your butt."
Ezra grinned. "Well, now that you've given me the idea. Gotta catch me first." If she were here, they both knew that he'd be running away giggling by now, while she brandished her paint cans and chased after them.
Casually, he stated, "Hera's not even thinking of touching your stuff till you get back,"
It was then she saw the raw fear in his eyes as he said those last words - what if she wasn't coming back? The unspoken words haunted her. She then felt a fierce tug in her stomach in her stomach that pulled her away from this barren planet that felt alien to her and back to the warmth of the Ghost right next to him. She wanted to put her arms around him. The past few weeks, she hadn't exactly been understanding. She'd been taking it out on the others, especially him, and now she finally recognised that he cared, He taught her the lightsaber forms with consideration, kindness, humour, with... dare she say it, love. She needed something real to say. That goodbye on Krownest had been too rushed, too brief - a quick hug that she didn't want to make longer because of her fear that she wasn't going to see him again. It wasn't enough to say all that she needed too, and all because she was afraid. She swallowed.
"I'm coming back," Sabine blurted out, urgently, with more conviction, and found that she meant it more than before. "I'll find the leader for my people and save my father and come back - I'm gonna do it all."
She found that she wasn't just saying this for Ezra, but also for herself and the crew. Her blood might be with Mandalore and the Wrens, but her heart belonged to the rebellion and to the Ghost Crew.
"I know," replied Ezra evenly, a real smile rippling over his features. It felt good to hear her say it. "And then we can finish off that bounty hunter suit."
Sabine cocked her head. "What can I say? You can't leave art unfinished."
The padawan beamed. They held each other's gazes for a few seconds more, and Ezra could feel now that she wasn't gone. She'd always be with him - her art swirling its way onto his helmets and into his room; her laugh echoing around the corridors.
"Then you've got work to do, Wren," he stated almost proudly. She gave him a twisted grin.
"I do indeed."
And Ezra reached out across the stars to her as he said, "We're a crew. A family. You told me that once. We'll always be together."
Somehow she could tell he meant it in more ways than one, and found that she felt warm and glowing inside. There was the sound of Fenn Rau calling her, and she turned back sheepishly. Ezra only chuckled. "Lemme guess - you got things to do, relatives to beat up, butt's to save."
She shot him a grin. "You know it. So... smell you later, Bridger?"
He smiled even wider. "How 'bout tonight, Wren?"
She raised her eyes to the sky. "You'd better bring Zeb, you sleemo."
He saluted. "Yes, ma'am. We'll bring waffles!"
"Just to make me jealous? Why am I not surprised?"
"Some things never change, 'Bine."
She knew they never would. And as they signed off, Ezra found that all he needed to do was close his eyes, and there she was; her eyes and hair lighting up the dark and filling his world with colour once more.
Whew! How was that? I'll be back for some more soon, with some future and AU fics on the way, so stay tuned folks. In the meantime, punch it, Chewie, cuz I'm outta here!
