The young man hovered in the shadows watching her as she sent arrows streaking gracefully towards the targets. She was so deadly, so beautiful. He loved her so much, but it would never be. He couldn't be near her or talk to her. It was forbidden.

He sighed softly wishing that he could have a life like hers. A normal one with few hardships and a loving mother. He'd only known his father. And while he knew who his mother was, he'd never spoken to her. Their's was a broken family and as far as he could tell, his mother despised him.

He longed for a loving family most of all. And he longed for the ability to openly share friendship with his sister. He would do nearly anything to receive that chance. But unfortunately, he couldn't see that happening any time soon.

In the shadowed darkness of the jungle, he turned, preparing to slip away. But his foot caught on a vine, snapping it. The girl whirled to face him, and her green eyes, framed by a dark complexion and gentle features, caught his, stopping his heart for an instant.

Had she seen him? If she had, she didn't make a move towards him. Softly, he picked himself up, careful not to let her catch a further glimpse of him, and he fled into the trees, heading for the relative safety of the men's compound. And hoping all the way that the girl with the green eyes hadn't seen him or would not betray his identity to the Queen. Because if she did, it was all over for him. All over.
