Firestar couldn't see anything. He felt as if his body was shrinking, shifting, being compressed into the body of a smaller cat-a very uncomfortable feeling.
He gasped at a sudden rush of pain. Then, the pain started to ebb to a bearable throb.
Firestar was unable to feel anything, not even his own body. He couldn't move.
Then, something appeared in the dark that surrounded him. Firestar recognised the cat as Thunder, the first leader of Thunderclan. However, when he went to greet him, he could not say anything.
"Your questions will be answered in time," the tom announced.
Firestar woke with a jolt, Thunder's words echoing in his ears.
Your questions will be answered in time, he remembered, slowly opening his eyes. But... oh my Starclan... I'm in a nursery?
Milky kit and queen scents reached his nose. The soft breathing of several cats filled his ears, and he could feel something moving against him. Starclan had nurseries for dead kits, but he didn't understand why he might be in one of them.
He turned, his green eyes widening when he saw the familiar she-cat beside him.
Bluestar? He thought. She looks like a kit. Looking past her, he noticed someone else in the nest. And Greystripe? He looks like a kit too.
He went to move when he caught sight of his paw. Looking again, he looked at as much of himself as he could, barely holding in a surprised yowl.
"Oh, Firekit! You're awake! And oh, you've opened your eyes! How wonderful." A she-cat's voice sounded. Firestar's head snapped in the direction of the voice. He'd reacted to the 'Fire', but the 'kit' part was new to him. He tilted his head to the side.
"Where... where am I?" Firestar, or kit, asked, choosing his words carefully.
"You're in the nursery. You're one of our clan's newest kits," the she-cat replied. "I'm Blossomstreak, your mother."
Firekit nodded slowly before looking at the two cats beside him. "And who are they?"
"Bluekit and Greykit," Blossomstreak answered. "Your siblings."
They definitely have to be Bluestar and Greystripe, he decided.
"Who are you talking to, Blossomstreak?" A cat on the other side of the nursery asked.
"One of my kits has opened his eyes, Nightfur," Blossomstreak replied.
Firekit observed the black she-cat as she replied, "That's nice."
Movement distracted the flame-coloured kit.
Bluestar-Bluekit, now-opened her eyes. The first thing she noticed was Firekit, so she stood up while Blossomstreak was distracted.
"Fires-" she began, but she was cut off.
"Bluekit," Firekit said. "I have a feeling that if we call each other by our former names... we're going to get in trouble."
"Alright, Firekit," Bluekit said, catching on to the fact she should act like a kit. "Do you know what's going on?"
"Only the fact we all must have collapsed... disappeared from Starclan and ended up here... except we're kits. Siblings, actually." He paused, looking at Bluekit a little differently. "It's weird having your former leader and mentor as your sibling."
"What in the name of Starclan?" A quiet voice belonging to a tom reached their ears.
"Greykit," Bluekit said, passing on what Firekit had said, "We're in the bodies of kits inside a nursery. Act like a kit... and call each other a kit."
"And," Firekit added on, pointing to Blossomstreak with his tail. "That's apparently our mother."
"Okay," Greykit said, a little too loudly as Blossomstreak turned her attention to the kits. She licked Bluekit and Greykit a few times, earning some complaints.
"Oh! They've all opened their eyes! Hello, little ones," Blossomstreak exclaimed.
"Congratulations," a she-cat, not Nightfur, said.
"Thank you, Petalpelt," Blossomstreak replied. "Glowheart, how are your kits doing?"
Greykit, Firekit and Bluekit looked at each other. Four litters? That was definitely suspicious. They noticed a fifth nest, and while the scent was still fresh, they guessed the kits were older.
They missed Glowheart's reply, but Greykit scooted over to his new sister and brother. "Guys," he muttered. "This looks like the Thunderclan nursery!"
Bluestar and Firestar exchanged an 'oh no' look before Greykit bounded up to his new mother. "Can we go outside?" He asked. "Please?"
Blossomstreak sighed. "Well... the sun's risen... and you're all awake..."
"Pleeeease?" Firekit joined the kit act as well. Bluekit just stretched her blue eyes as wide as she could, hoping they looked pleading.
Blossomstreak sighed, giving in. "Very well."
As soon as she finished, The three kits ran for the entrance. "But you'll come back inside when I tell you, and don't disturb anyone!"
"We won't!" Greykit called over his shoulder before following his siblings outside.
They all couldn't help but stare in horror at their surroundings. Their nightmare had come true. They were in the Thunderclan camp.
"We've been... reborn?" Firekit murmured, not sure if he should be awed or frightened.
"Let's wait behind the nursery," Bluekit suggested. "We can wait and see if anyone else like us comes out, and we can look at this... new Thunderclan."
Firekit and Greykit nodded, following Bluekit behind the nursery. They could see rather well who exited and entered the nursery, and they had a pretty good view of the camp.
"I've never seen these cats before, Bluekit said. "Not even in Starclan. Something is definitely wrong..."
Firekit nodded. "Definitely suspicious... isn't it."
Greykit nodded. "Hey," he then said. "That cat looks like Cloudtail."
Firekit and Bluekit followed his gaze. "Yeah," Firekit said, realising the cat really did look like his former nephew.
"Maybe they're related," Bluekit suggested.
"Maybe."
Silence hang between the three of them for a small while, making the only audible sound the meows and purrs of the cats in the clearing.
"This is going to be weird," Greykit muttered, finally breaking the silence.
"It's already weird," Firekit quickly said. "You and I are best friends, I'm a former leader, Bluestar is also our former leader and my mentor and now look-we're siblings!'
Bluekit looked up at the sky. "Maybe Starclan know what's going on," she murmured.
"Wouldn't Starclan have sent us for a reason?" Greykit asked.
"We were part of Starclan," Firekit commented. He then caught a familiar scent on the air and stiffened.
"Firekit?" Greykit asked.
"We aren't the only ones here," he told them. They scented the air and realised what he was saying. "There are other reborn cats too."
