I laid on the soft mattress next to Asa. I wasn't able to sleep so I just stared at him. His lips were parted slightly and he released warm breath every now and then. His hair was ruffled slightly and his eyes scrunched up every now and then. He was so handsome.
I sighed in a grateful manner because I still couldn't believe that such an amazing human being would pick me. It was unreal still. He was perfect; rich, talented, handsome, funny, and so kind.
All of a sudden, his large hands started to tremble slightly and his breath became fast moving. I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion and stared at him as he began to sweat.
I started to shake him awake, "Asa."
He didn't respond and so that began to worry me, but before I could shake him awake again he screamed loudly and bolted right up.
His eyes were wide and sweat dripped from his face onto the pillow. I sat up quickly and caressed his cheek, whispering comforting words in his ear. All of a sudden, he started crying.
"Oh my gosh, Asa, Asa. What wrong?" I ask and lean in to hug him.
He hugs me back quickly and starts mumbling inaudible words. He kept rushing his words and end up breaking down. The sight broke me and I couldn't even think about what would put him like this.
"Asa, look at me." I say sternly and he quickly looks up at me, "What's wrong? What happened?"
He sobbed into my neck and said slowly, " I- I remembered when..."
He once again started crying and I couldn't help, but let a single tear stream down my face. I loved him too much and seeing him like this teared me apart, I can't stand seeing him like this.
"Baby, take your time. It's fine." I cooed and kissed his forehead.
"I-I re-remembered when she-she died." He cried out and hiccuped in my arms.
I rubbed his head lightly and ran my fingers through his black hair. It was completely dark in the room, but somehow I managed to see his broken face and even though I hated seeing him like that, it reminded me that he was human and also lost special people.
"Go on baby, let it out." I said and kissed his cheek once we were at eye level.
"It's just, my sister, she died. She meant so much to me and I've never told anyone this, but it was my fault." He let out a small whimper, "She-she was mad at me and got out of the house and that's when the car hit her. I watched her die, Macy! I could've saved her, I could've done anything, but I didn't. It's all my fault."
A few tears escaped my eyes and I quickly shook my head. I put my hands around his neck and whispered in his ear, "Asa it is not your fault. Everything happens for a reason, baby. You can't prevent something that is bound to happen."
"No, Macy! It was my fault!" He cried, "If only I would've let her explain herself, let her stay at the house!"
I pulled away and pulled him into me. Our lips connected and I could feel the sorrow in the kiss, the sadness. We broke the kiss after a few seconds and I smiled.
"Everything happens for a reason, even us." I said and kissed his forehead.
He shook his head and cried softly into my shoulder. It was impossible to heal such a lost. It was impossible to let someone come to their senses when they don't understand. And no matter how much I'd like to make him understand, I can't, because those nightmares are the ones that keep holding us down.
