“What does it take to be the apple of Prince Daniel Beron’s eyes, Dan?” Roxie asked me, her eyes still as red as rubies under the sun. They were too bright to look at, even.

I gave her a smirk as a reply. She scowled at me. My answer obviously did not satisfy her. She was craving for a detailed explanation of the things I look for in a girl but I definitely don’t want to reveal everything. For goodness sake. She’s my bestfriend for years and I already know that she couldn’t keep a secret. She’s a bigmouth, to be honest. She might tell every girl in school the answer to her question and they will start acting as my “dream girl”.

Seriously, I’m tired of girls who literally throw themselves at me. Some, of course, are only told to do so by their parents, most especially their mothers. That’s why I hate being a prince sometimes.

Most of them tease me a lot. They try to seduce me although they already know that I am not that kind of guy. They wear skimpy clothes even in school and wear pieces of jewelry that could weight tons. I always see them during social gatherings, where they try to get me to dance with them and even ask me to be their date. Luckily, I have Roxie Rowe for a bestfriend. She acts as my possessive girlfriend towards the ‘slutty’ girls who flaunt everything they have in front of me. Roxie’s definition of ‘slutty’ girls includes Selena Bracker.

Well, Selena wasn’t like that before. We were classmates since forever. She was, before, a simple girl who loves to play like everybody else before. But of course, things change.

And I belong to the lucky few who know the tragic backstory behind her massive transformation.

Selena was raised by a tough business man and a high profile woman— both were cold and distant and were always forcing her to reach for the best. They taught her to shove people who stand on her way away from her. They always made sure she looked pretty, elegant and formal, pleasing to everybody’s eyes. They made her forget her carefree life and made her believe that life is a battle she must win. She doesn’t stand placing second, for they told her that she should always be a winner.

They made them do all of those until she learned to do them without anybody telling her. She was trained to be who she is now.

Selena is pretty, really. But they turned her into a horrible monster.

“Daniel, you are daydreaming.” Roxie sighed.

“I’m not.” I defended myself, finally jumping back to reality.

“You were. Now, can you please answer my question? The next time you’ll be shutting me off like this, I’m leaving.” She complained. “Just answer!”

“Fine, then.” I said. I grinned as I thought of a brilliant response to her troublesome question. “To be the apple of Daniel Harvard-Beron’s eyes, a girl must be herself.”

In all good conscience, all I want is a simple girl who can make me think and who is sassy enough to light up my gloomy world like nobody else has ever done before.

All of a sudden, someone wearing a hooded cape came running towards us. We were both shocked by the person’s sudden appearance that we weren’t able to move. I didn’t know who that is and I’m pretty sure Roxie knows nothing about him or her too.

I sighed of relief as the person took of the cape’s hood. It was Jasmine, my ever dependable personal assistant and friend, after all. She was obviously tired at thirsty that I had to hand her a bottle of water. After drinking, she looked at Roxie and me.

“My prince, Queen Annabella and King Chester just made the whole army of peacekeepers search the entire Capitol to find you!” She said.
