Jasmine/Emily’s POV
The sound of screaming woke me up. It is already midnight, yet it seems that someone is still awake. Not just someone, actually, but a lot of people. I got up and took my flashlight from my drawer, trying my best no to wake up the people inside the maids’ quarters, and then sneaked around the Beron Manor.
The lights were all off but I am sure that the sound was from inside the mansion. I went near every door and tried to listen to what might be happening inside. Nothing was heard from Princess Stephanie’s room aside from the soothing melody from her music box. I checked the King and Queen’s room but it was quiet. I put my ear against the prince’s room’s door but picked up nothing but soft little snores.Cute.
Continuing my quest, I went to check on the other rooms. I checked the library, the kitchen, the king’s office, the portrait room and the museum, but heard no sound. I was about to take the alternate route to the maids’ quarters but then I perceived another piercing scream.
The stockroom.
I looked from left to right. I saw no peacekeeper. Perhaps there is a thing going on that the people involved want to keep it a secret that even the tongue-tied peacekeepers cannot know about it.
“Why don’t you tell us, Nancy?” Someone said in a very robot-like voice. “You surely don’t want us to hurt Carter once more, right?”
What? Nancy and Carter Oakley? Natalia’s parents are still here? As far as I know, captured rebels are immediately brainwashed and made peacekeepers, factory workers or slaves.
“She won’t tell you anything even if you kill me.” A guy’s voice said, chuckling, although his voice sounded already weary.
“She will.” I took a quick peek and saw Nancy and Carter in front of General Calvin Sanders and two other hooded men. It was General Sanders who was talking while his companions held long elastic whips. “Or else we’ll be forced to hurt your daughter.”
“No!” Nancy and Carter said at the exact same time. Both looked so worried, perhaps because of thinking about what might happen to Natalia.
“Tell us, then. Where is the princess?”
“She’s with you!” Carter yelled. Yes, she is.
“I’m not talking about Princess Stephanie Beron, you moron.” The hooded guy at General Sander’s right finally spoke up. “We’re talking about Princess Ericka Sage, the only child of the lateKing Zeus and Queen Katherine.”
“Ericka Sage was no princess, Katherine was no queenand Zeus was no king! You know that, Calvin!” As soon as Carter finished talking, the hooded guy at the general’s left beat him.
“Stop!” Nancy yelled, crying. “The form of government before wasn’t monarchy. It was only Chester who started it.”
“King Chester, Nancy. King.” The general said. “So, will you speak up now?”
“No, Nancy, don’t” Carter pleaded. General Sanders took a whip from one of his hooded confidantes and whipped him.
“SHE’S WITH DARIUS!!!”
What?! Ericka FREAKING Sage has been at the camp all along?!
“Darius Carlton, huh.Poor Darius. He trusted two people who could not keep his little secret for too long.” He raised a gun, pointing it at Nancy. I closed my eyes yet kept my ears alert and prepared myself for what’s yet to come. As I had expected, I heard to resounding gunshots, which signaled the death of two of Darius’ most valued accomplices, who were, at one point, TRAITORS.
