Her mother knocked on her door.

" Kathy, how is it going?" she asked. "Can i see now?"

Kathy opened the door. " Now i'm done, i just need you to read it and then tell me what you think,"

"Okay," her mother said. Kathy handed the completed papers to her mother.

As her mother read it, Kathy looked at a gift wrapped in a colourful gift wrapper on her desk. It was beautifully decorated with ribbons. She had tied it herself.

It was for Lucy. A gift for her best friend. Kathy didn't need anything from her other than their friendship.

She can't wait for the next day to give it to her. She would surely love it. Kathy knew it. She bought it at a local gift shop. It was a bedside lamp in the shape of a cartoon character. It could also be used as a coin bank.

"Wow, this is really good," her mother said after reading it. "I'm not going to ask you to add or change anything unless you want to. It's your work," she smiled.

          Kathy was pleased with it.

"Come on, it's past your bed time. Don't wait 'til your father raises his voice," said her mother.

She tucked Kathy in bed and turned of the lights. Kathy slept soundly feeling excited.

At school the next day, she wasn't alone anymore. Janet, her classmate talked to her during class. Kathy was able to help her with the Math homework. Daren too. And Amelia and Jenna and Bruce as well.

"When i first saw you, i thought you were the kind who didn't like to talk much," said Amelia. " How come you've changed?"

" Yeah, how come?" Daren agreed. Janet nodded as well.

Kathy smirked. " I don't know, maybe its because i WAS the kind who didn't like to talk much,"

They all laughed loudly in the classroom. Kathy was starting to like school now.

People were starting to socialize with her. She was happy for that. Teachers were pleased with her. That made her even happier. As it was, she had made friends.

Kathy had brought along the gift for Lucy in her bag. Not forgetting the story she wrote in the papers.

After school ended, she walked impatiently to the grey dull pathway where she expected a box full of life. Where she expected her best friend.

And that is exactly what she did not see that day. A feeling struck her as she looked at the empty colourless box.

She felt happy. She took the gift out of her school bag and tore the wrapping paper off.    She read the tag :   For Kathy, well done.

Lucy talked so much, but said so little. She didn't need to.

Lucy was the person she wanted to become. Sociable, likable, brave...

In the end, Kathy achieved it. She didn't need Lucy anymore.

She was Lucy.
