Don't Give Up

I’d only slept a total of thirty minutes the entire night. I was questioning myself, doubting my decisions and regretting them. Then I would convince myself that what I had done was right. I had made the right decisions and I didn’t regret them. But maybe I did…

My mind went through this vicious circle until I noticed that the sun was already high in the sky. I looked at the clock. It was nearly noon.

I sighed and rolled over, unwillingly climbing out of bed and heading to the bathroom to brush my teeth and hair and somehow get rid of the puffiness under my eyes.

As I was getting dressed, I heard the door of my bedroom creak open.

“Sky?” I recognized Carrie’s voice. “You in here?”

“Yeah, in here,” I said from the bathroom. I heard her footsteps as she made her way over. She opened the door wide and leaned against the frame. She had an apologetic smile across her face.

“I heard you and Luke last night. Well, I couldn’t hear what you were saying but I could tell it wasn’t exactly good,” she said quietly. I looked at her through the mirror as I applied my mascara. She frowned.

“Michael also kind of filled me in with what Luke told him,” she said. I frowned and stared at the sink.

“Luke didn’t tell Ashton, did he?” I desperately hoped he didn’t Ashton deserved to hear it from me. He was the most sympathetic, compassionate person and I owed him the same in return.

“I don’t think so. Luke hasn’t been back to the hotel all night. Michael called him.”

I nodded gratefully.

“Tell me what’s going on, babe,” Carrie said softly. She walked over to me and placed a hand on my shoulder, looking at me through the mirror. Suddenly, I broke down. Crying hard and ruining the mascara I has just put on.

I told her everything. The night I had with Luke, the short amount of time I thought he used me, my entire date with Ashton, the kiss we shared, the confusion, the conversation I had with Luke. Everything.

Carrie just stood silently, listening to my every word and nodding once in a while. She was the best listener and I thought of her as a sister.

Being able to vent to her did wonders for me. I didn’t feel so hurt or confused once I laid it all out in front of me.

“So now you’re gonna go tell Ashton?” she asked.

“Yeah,” I replied. She nodded and crinkled her eyebrows, thinking about what advice she was going to give me next.

“I support you in your decision, Sky. You know that. No matter what,” she said.

“But?”

“If it were me, which it’s not so this is completely irrelevant, but if it were me… I’d give myself a little longer to figure things out. I don’t think I would try to completely forget about them. I’d want to be sure about my feelings for them,” she said quickly, not wanting to plant any more doubt in me.

I understood what she meant and it made so much sense. But when I looked into Luke and Ashton’s eyes, I could see the hope. I could see the pain. And I could see the cause. Me.

I couldn’t stand the thought of that.

“I’m not changing my mind,” I said softly. She nodded and pulled me in for a hug.

“Then like I said, I support you,” she said, squeezing me tighter. In that moment I was so appreciative of my best friend. My sister.

“Now, enough of my drama,” I sniffed. “Tell me everything that has been going on between you and Michael!”
