My name is Damian McGee. I am a 16 year old mutant, also know as a Mute. When I said mutant, I didn't mean like in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were you turn into a huge animal or a monster...well at least not anymore.

A hundred years ago, a huge lab had a leak, somehow affecting trillions of people all around the world, giving them strange powers and looks. Of course, society didn't like this and divided the world into 2 states, with 30 districts in total, 10 of them belong to us, the Mutes. The other 20 to the Norms, even though our population was three times more than theirs. We were also the poorer state, most of us barley scrapping by.

After all those years we have evolved, not looking like freaks as much as we use to. Most of us actually looked like Norms, except for our strange abilities. But still, society forbid us to have contact with each other. Of course I didn't care, but that was until I found out about Barry...

Did I mention I am a orphan? No? Well my parents were also both born as Mutes, but as I mentioned almost everyone was poor, my parents unfortunately to. So they abandoned me when I was still a new born, leaving me on the steps of District 27's local Orphanage. I grew up there but I was bad news, a rebel as the staff said. No one wanted me, no one even talked to me. But that all changed when I was about 10, and a new child came to the Orphanage.

He was about 8 at the time, he had similar features as me, dirty blonde hair, dark hazel eyes. Except he didn't have the awful scar over his face like I did. His eyes were red and puffy, I could see he was crying. The lady that took care of us, Miss Kate, introduced the boy to us, his name was Barry, he had recently lost both of his parents due to murder.

It was lunch time when she introduced him, and all of us were sitting at the lunch tables eating, what the staff called "Food". I was at my usual spot in the corner, no one sitting with me. I kept my eye on the boy, he walked shyly with his plate, looking for a spot to sit. Then Marco, the biggest jerk in the Orphanage, walked over to him and knocked the poor boys plate out of his hands. I jumped up and marched over to him, my hands balled in fists.

" What do you want freak?" Marco asked when I stood in front of him. I didn't say a word to him just pushed him over making him land on the hard ground with a thund, then I looked at the boy. " If this asshole ever hurts or bother you again, tell me." I saw him shyly smile and slightly nod. I walked back to my table and sat down, just then the boy approached me. "Um...excuse me but do you mind if I sit here? W-with you?" I shook my head and gestured for him to sit. He took his seat across from me. Since that day, we were inseparable.

He soon became my brother. We always had each other's backs. He wasn't as bad as me, people actually even wanted to adopt him. But he would always refuse, unless I could come with...But no one wanted me, so the two of us lived in the Orphanage.

A few years later, a new law was formed due to all the imposters crossing the state borders. Mutes pretending to be Norms and vise versa. Once every year, every person in the state, ages 12 and up, had to be checked, to see if you are in the right state. And I was 12, so I was checked that year. Classified as Mute. No surprise there.

But one day me and Barry went to play in the junk yard behind the Orphanage. We snuck out through a loose plank in the fence. We rummaged through the junk, looking for cool things to play with. "Hey Damian, what is this thing?" Barry asked me showing a strange gadget. "Oh that's that weird thing they use to classify you as a Mute or Norm." I said taking the device from him and studying it.

"Does it hurt when they do it?" He asked and I shook my head. " Nope. It only gives you a tingly feeling. " "Can you test me?" He asked with his normal innocent look. "But you already know your a Mute. Otherwise you wouldn't have been in this District." I said. " I know but I want to know how the tingly feeling feels." He said his eyes lighting up. "Okay then. Stand up straight in front of me." He did as I told and I pressed the button, making a blue light that scan up and down Barry's body.

I looked at the result but was shocked at what I saw...He was a Norm. My eyes widened, and Barry must have noticed because he asked me," What's wrong Damian?" "Uh nothing. I just think this thing is broken that's all." "Why?" He asked and I showed him the results displayed on the gadget. "But I thought I was a Mute." He looked confused and ran his hand through his hair. "Like I said, I think this piece of shit is broken." I told him even though there was a part of me that didn't believe it. "But it kinda makes sense." He said in a whisper, but still loud enough for me to hear. "What does?" "That I'm a Norm...I don't have any special abilities like you. You can disappear into shadows and I can't." I saw him look down, fiddling with his fingers.

My heart sank. I didn't want accept it but he was a Norm, if I liked it or not. "Barry...You know what that means right?" I asked my voice cracking a bit. "What?" He asked looking up. "That means they'll take you away...from the Orphanage, this District... They'll take you away from me." His eyes widened. "What? They can't take me away from you! Your my brother I can't lose you!" Tears started forming in his eyes, making some build in my own.I pulled him into a hug and I could hear him softly let out a few sobs. " Hey, don't cry. I won't let them take you away. They'll have to get through me first to do that." He pulled away and nodded as he wiped his tears off. "But what if I have go get tested? I'm almost 12." "We'll just keep you away from them. Make sure no one finds out that your a Norm."

Since that day I made it my sworn duty to make sure that no one will find out about this and that no one will separate me from my brother...
