"So, Gabriella, how are your grades?" Tyler asked as him, Lele, Josh, Gabriella, and I all sat around the dining room table eating dinner.
"Uh, they're good," she said.
Lele and I both laughed. As one of her teachers, I had access to all her grades, and they weren't good. She had a habit of not turning in her work. "What? Was it not a good question?" Tyler asked.
"No, it's not that, it's the fact that Gabriella here thinks she can get away with lying to you, especially since she has her mom and her band teacher here," I said.
"Ok, fine, I may have SOME missing assignments," Gabriella said.
"SOME? I almost couldn't take you to Cedar Point with the marching band because of your grades," I said.
"Ok, jeez, so my grades are pretty bad. Can we please not talk about this?"
"Ok, we'll talk about it when we get home later," Lele said before her phone went off, "Ugh, it's Kevin. I better answer it. He may be my ex, but he's still Gabbi's dad."
"Ok. Tell him I still don't like him!" I called as she answered the phone and walked into the other room.
"So, has Nattie gotten anything organized for the wedding yet?" Josh asked me.
"Babe, calm down. It's only been a day. Plus, she's probably having fun with our tourist friends tonight," I said.
"She has a point," Tyler said, mouth full of food.
"Um, Mr. Joseph, can you PLEASE not talk with your mouth full?" Gabriella asked.
Tyler swallowed. "Yes, but Gabbi, we've been over this. Please call me Tyler, Mr. Joseph makes me sound old."
"Maybe I just like making you sound old," she said, "You never know."
"Really?" he said.
"Ok, jeez, both of you, why don't you just eat," Josh said.
"Sorry about that guys. He wanted to know when to pick up Gabriella. I'm gonna have him pick her up here in a little bit, is that ok?" Lele said as she walked back into the room.
"Yeah, that's fine. So, Gabbi, eat," I said.
She nodded and started eating again, but faster. A few minutes later, the doorbell rang. "I got it," Josh said before getting up to answer the door.
When he came back in, Kevin was behind him. "Gabriella, you ready to go?" Kevin asked.
She nodded. "Let me go get my backpack out of the living room," she said, rushing into the living room.
"So, it's her week with you asshole," I said once she left the room.
"Chloe, I know you don't like me, but you don't need to be like that. We're adults, can we act like that?" Kevin responded. He was a psychiatrist, and he always tried to use his tactics on me. And it never worked.
"No, no we can't. The only reason you're even standing there is because I'M not a bitch."
"So, I break your sister's heart in high school and you can't let go of it. That was so long ago."
"Charlie hasn't let go of it. You cheated on her Kevin. And got someone else pregnant. When you were fifteen."
"Um, Dad, I'm ready to go," Gabriella said as she walked back into the dining room.
"Ok. I'll see you guys later," Kevin said, following Gabriella out the door.
I just gave him an evil look as he closed the door behind him. "So, are we all done eating?" I asked, and everyone nodded.
I nodded and grabbed all the plates, took them into the kitchen, rinsed them, and put them in the dishwasher so I could start it later. "So, anyone wanna meet the others at that club?" I asked as I walked back out into the dining room.
"I'm gonna head home. I'll see you guys tomorrow," Lele said before getting up and waving goodbye as she walked out the door.
"Ok, seriously though, who's coming with me?" I asked the boys.
"I'll come," Josh said.
"Yeah, I have nothing better to do, so why not?" Tyler said.
I nodded, getting up and grabbing my car keys. "Let's go then."
Josh came and took the keys from me. "No. We'll take an Uber. I don't want any of us driving home."
"Babe, I have work tomorrow, I'm not gonna have that much to drink. I'll drive."
"No. Just in case. I'm not taking any chances."
I rolled my eyes, but put the keys back in the tray on the table in the hallway by the door. "Fine. Call it in. I'm gonna be outside practicing for the staff soccer game. If we lose because of me, Lele's gonna kill me."
"I'll be goalie!" Tyler said as he walked up to us, "Still using those bushes as a goal?"
"Hell yeah," I said, grabbing my soccer ball from our closet under the stairs.
I followed Tyler out the door as Josh got on the phone with Uber and followed me out. "Ok, I told them we'd be the ones out front playing soccer with nothing but a Twenty Øne Piløts soccer ball and our landscaping," he said when he hung up.
"Good description. Ok, you gonna play some one-on-one with me?" I asked him.
"Wait, so who's team am I on?" Tyler asked.
"Neither. Just block any shot. We've done this before," I said.
"Oh, right. Ok then. Let's go," he said.
We played soccer for a little bit before the Uber driver got here. And, of course, it was a fan. It's not like it was hard to tell when they drove up blasting 'Trees' or anything. "Oh, ok. Wow. Sorry, where are you guys going?" the girl asked. Her name was Michelle.
"We're joining some of our friends at this club. I have a few friends from out of town staying with us," I said.
"Where from?"
"Uh, California, close to San Bernardino."
"Oh, that's cool. I grew up out in Ontario."
"Cool. That's where they flew out of."
"Cool. Hey, do you guys mind signing my CD cases?" she asked the boys.
"Nope, not at all," Josh said, "Babe, do you have your sliver Sharpie with you?"
"Uh, Tyler, I gave it to you," I said.
"Yeah, I have it in my pocket," Tyler said as he pulled it out of his jacket pocket.
She handed them the cases, and they signed them right as we pulled into the club parking lot, ready to party.
