“What have you heard about the first?”

Mariska looked to her mother in law in question. The elder female looked frightened, her hands shaking, beautiful blue eyes blinking rapidly. It was the first time she had seen her so upset. The usually proud and stunning wolf was turned into a whimpering puppy after the meeting with the Oracles.

“Only stories.” Hera brushed her sleek hair back, tugging slightly on the ends. “When I was a pup, the elders warned us about it.”

Mariska frowned. “What sort of warnings?”

Hera looked around her bedroom, before getting up and shutting the door. She leaned her head against it, sighing. “What I say must never leave this room little one. If the other’s were to find out their would be chaos.”

“You have my word.”

Having lost her mother so young, Mariska had looked to Hera as a replacement. The alpha female treating her kindly, unlike her daughter. “It was said the First was our creator. A demonic being taking humans prisoner and turning them into beasts.” She flinched at her use of words. Beast. It was what they had been called for centuries. “The first was cruel. Waging war against all who opposed it.”

Mariska shook her head. “But aren’t they just stories?”

Hera shrugged her delicate shoulders. “That is what I believed.”

Mariska opened her mouth, another question on her mind, before the door was opened. Her heartbeat quickened as Cronos stood in the doorway. “Shouldn’t you be back in your cage feeble wolf?” His deep voice echoed around the room, uncaring.

She flinched at his tone. “Forgive me Alpha.” As she stood up to leave, Hera held her back.

“Mind your tongue mate, she belongs to your son now.”

Cronos glared at them. “What is this? This vile being has turned you against me has she?” He growled, his usually black eyes glowing amber. Mariska whimpered as he barked out, “Leave my sight before I forget just who you belong to.”

She ran from the room quicker than she could have imagined. A tear in her eye, she wiped it angrily as she felt her blood boil. She had, had enough. The stares were tolerable. The whispering annoying. But the abuse was downright unfair! She had done nothing to deserve this. She was a loyal mate, a good pack member. Yet she was treated as an enemy.

The hair on her neck stood as she felt someone following her. Glancing behind her, she shook her head at the two guards keeping a watchful eye on her. “I know you’re there. Just-just take me to my cage.”

“Favourite color?”

“Green. Your turn. Favourite movie?”

“The Wolf Man.”

Mariska threw her head back in laughter, slapping her knee. It was the first time in days she had smiled so widely.

She was locked in her cell, swapping stories and strange facts with Samuel. In a short time they had become friends, dearly enjoying each other’s company.

“Biggest piece of filth I’ve ever seen.”

Samuel gasped. “That is a piece of classic cinema.” He shrugged his shoulders. “Anyway, other than your inability to understand good film,” She scoffed as he continued. “you seem pretty normal.”
