The car pulled to a stop.

"We're here." The girl sighed. She leaned back and took in the view.

They were on a mountain of some sort.

Mount Nelson.

It must of been. That was the only mountain near where they lived. Joe had gone up this mountain plenty of times when he was younger. It was actually his favourite place to go with his family. Although Joe was familiar with Mount Nelson, he had never seen this part of the mountain before.

Joe had just spent the last 10 minutes bumping along some dirt road in the middle of a forest. He had no idea how this girl had managed to find the road in the first place. The forest had cleared and revealed an array of rocks splattered across the edge of the mountain. A small bridge led to a lookout. The city was lit up below and produced a marvellous sight.

"Wow

"Wow." Joe whispered. It was beautiful. Who knew some dusty old road lead to this angelic place.

"C'mon." The girl whispered. She opened her car door and Joe was immediately greeted by a rush of wind. Joe followed her lead and opened his door. The rain had stopped a couple of minutes ago but the ground was still really wet and slippery.

They walked together and made their way to the lookout. The girl jumped up and sat on the edge of the railing. Joe looked at how far the lookout was from the ground.

It was high.

That was definitely not safe.

Oh what the hell.

Joe joined her and swung his legs over the edge.

The wind whipped through his hair and prickled his bare skin.

"What do you think they're doing?" The girl said, her eyes were lit up by the moon and when she turned to face Joe, she caught him staring at her.

Joe turned his focus from the girl towards the view. Luckily, it was dark out. She hopefully wouldn't be able to see the red tinge that had sprawled across his face.

"Uh – what do you mean?" He asked, trying hard to focus his attention on the view and not on the girl next to him.

"All those people." She pointed out towards the lights below.

"What do you think they're doing?" She repeated.

"Oh. I don't know." Joe laughed.

What a weird question to ask.

Both of them sat in silence for a while as Joe thought about what she had just said. He slowly started to understand.

All those lights across the city were people. Every light represented a different person.

A different story.

A different lifestyle.

"They could be doing anything." Joe finally said.

His eyes closed for a moment as he reached over and took the girl's hand in his own. He laced his hand through hers. It was a spur of the moment decision, but he was glad she didn't hesitate but lace her fingers through his.

"I've never taken anyone here before. Not since –" The girl paused and looked at her and Joe's intertwined hands. Joe felt her hand tense for a second before she relaxed. Joe felt like something was wrong. He could feel she wasn't entirely comfortable.

"Since what?" Joe said softly as he gave her hand a squeeze.

"Since my Dad died." She whispered. Her voice was barely audible against the wind.

The girl closed her eyes and took in a deep breath.
She focused entirely on her surroundings.

The wind hammering against her face.
The smell of fresh air and wood.
The rough metal railing on which she was sitting.
The sound of distant animal calls and the warmth she felt with Joe sitting next to her. She felt his larger, heated hand connected with her dainty, cool palm.

Something just felt right.

It felt right holding Joe's hand and it felt right when she decided to take him here. To her special place.

-

Joe and the girl had talked for hours. They had talked about anything and everything. He had found out so much about her, and he couldn't believe he had only met her a few hours before. They were no longer sitting on the edge of the railing, they had moved back to the warmth of the car and watched the sun rise together. Both of them had stayed up the whole night talking.

Joe felt peaceful and contempt, sitting in this beautiful place with this beautiful, intelligent and amazing girl. He closed his eyes and let sleep overpower him.
