As I went downstairs, I could hear arguing. I stopped, suddenly, and tried to figure out which room it was coming from. Was it the living room? Or maybe the dining room? But as I took another step, I figured out that it was coming from the kitchen. I sat on the seventh step, from the bottom, and just listened.
MUM: "Why do you always do this? Especially in front of the kids!"
DAD: "The kids aren't even fucking here! And it's not like you're any better, is it?
MUM: "I swear to God, why can't you just leave my house?"
DAD: "Do you really think I wanna leave our fucking kids alone?"
MUM: "They are not alone! They're with me! Just leave ... please!"
DAD: "Fine!"
The door slammed behind my dad as he left.
I ran upstairs to my room and jumped into my bed. I opened the draw, from my bedside table, and took out some of my dads letters, that he used to send when he was in the royal navy. I started reading but as my eyes moved down the paper, my vision started to get blurry. Tears were falling down my face and they wouldn't stop.
KNOCK! KNOCK! KNOCK! My bedroom door opened. It was my brother, Chad.CHAD: "Lauryn, come downstairs, please?"
ME: "I don't want to."
CHAD: "I ordered pizza."
ME: I'm not hungry."
CHAD: "You have to eat something. I'll leave some on your desk, in case you get hungry."
As Chad left my room and I continued to read the letters.
