Eventually, after I was sure everyone was asleep, I made my way to the tent. I unzipped the tent and someone stirred, sitting up when I'd almost successfully made it back. "Merci?" Tyler whispered to me.
"Yeah," I replied hesitantly. I considered telling him that this was only a dream, but that would only make him more awake.
"We... we need to talk," he said to me. He slowly got up, I let out a breath that I'd been holding. I knew this would come soon, but I was hoping it wouldn't have to be now, when the emotion behind everything was still fresh.
"Okay," I said softly, trying to remain quiet as I stepped out of the tent.
He followed, when I got a good look at him my heart dropped. His eyes were red and puffy, his cheeks tear stained. By this time, I knew he figured everything out. "Be honest with me," Tyler started saying, "What happened between you two?"
I looked anywhere but his eyes. "I kissed him," I mumbled softly, hoping he couldn't hear me.
"Did, did he lead you on?" Tyler asked, hoping desperately to find a way to blame Shane and not me.
"No. I got frustrated, for stupid reasons, and ran into him while I was getting away from the fire. All he did was ask me if I was okay, then I kissed him." I stepped forward, not knowing what else to do. Tyler took a step back as I did. "Tyler, I didn't mean-"
"Don't say you didn't mean it," he snapped, cutting me off. "There was obviously something there between the two of you, I guess I just hoped there wasn't."
"Don't act like I'm the only one interested in someone else," I said, suddenly angered at him. I held my fists at my side, trying to control myself.
"What do you mean?" he asked, sounding as if he knew what I was talking about, but not wanting to admit it. I decided I needed to spell it out for him.
"Abby. You've got a thing for Abby, you seemed to have forgotten I know how you feel around her. You feel something for her that you've lost around me," I said to him.
"At least I'm not acting on it," he said. I couldn't help but notice he didn't deny that he'd had feelings for her. I guess if he did deny it, I would know he was lying. "You know what I've lost? Passion. Being with you is boring, it's safe."
There was so much I wanted to say. I wanted to yell at him, blame him for the boringness, I wanted to make him apologize. I didn't want for this to be happening. Before long, tears had started to roll down my cheeks, and I went to wipe them off.
"Look, Merci," Tyler said. His voice shook, and I could no longer differentiate between his feelings and my own. It was all a blur, and we were feeling similar things. "I think we should-"
"Don't say it," I told him. He looked away, fidgeting with his hands nervously.
"I have to, Merci, I don't think we should be together. We're both interested in other people," he said.
I took a shaky breath, "Ty, it won't happen again. I love you."
"I know," he replied. He didn't say anything more. He went numb. I tried to figure out which part he said he knew to. Either way is bad. If he knew it wouldn't happen again, but was still breaking up with me, well, he was still breaking up with me. It also hurt, it hit me hard when he didn't return the "I love you." It was the first time he'd ever rejected me.
After a minute of thinking like this, he turned around, pausing at the entrance of the tent before he went in. I waited outside for a few minutes, I contemplated not going back in, but the exhaustion daytime brought on me forced me into the tent.
As I tried to sleep, I noticed that both Tyler and Shane were awake. Tyler was trying his best to remain numb, probably because he didn't want to feel anything. Shane, we'd woken him when we were talking. He heard almost everything. I didn't know where his thoughts were, but he felt embarrassed, as if he were intruding on something he wasn't supposed to. Now, he continued to intrude as he couldn't ignore how I felt.
