A searing pain dragged Nina into consciousness. A low groan escaped her mouth as she reached up to touch her forehead, wincing at the pain of moving. Slowly, Nina forced her eyes open to take in her surroundings, and instantly regretted the decision. The blinding yellow light of the sun hurt her sensitive eyes as soon as they opened, sending another shockwave of pain through her entire body. Holding back her tears, Nina forced her eyes open once again, fighting to battle through the excruciating pain of the sunlight.
Finally, after a long time of squinting and trying to avoid looking directly at the window, Nina's eyes slowly adjusted, and the pain ebbed until she could open her eyes completely. The room was somewhat small, but homey. The walls were a light brown color and the floor was of the same color hardwood, the walls were decorated with pictures and paintings, at the side of the bed was a purple shag carpet that covered most of the floor.
With heavy limbs, Nina threw away her violet covers and threw her sore legs over the side of the bed, sitting there in pain for a good while before attempting to stand. Taking a deep breath, the ebony haired girl dragged herself painfully to her feet, trying to control her Jell-O legs as they threatened to buckle underneath her. Trying her best to ignore the pain that raced through her whole body, Nina inched forward, ignoring the fact that her face was sticky and she was wearing a bright pink nightgown.
Just as she was about to open the door, Michael beat her to it. The two stared at each other for a long moment before Nina's legs finally crumbled and she fell into the mans chest, where he held her until she could stand once more. It was immensely awkward.
"Milady, what are you doing out of bed?" He asked calmly, but his green eyes gave away his anxiety as he looked down at the dark haired girl who was still using him as a crutch. Nina took the chance and began questioning him.
"Why am i in here? What happened to me? Where are my clothes? Why don't i remember last night?" She showered the towering man with questions as he stood there, the fear in his eyes turning to an awkward glint as he shifted nervously.
"Why don't you come with me. I'll get some food in you before telling you what happened last night." Michael said, wrapping a strong arm around Nina's tiny waist to support her as he led her down a long hallway that lacked windows towards the kitchen. The first thing Nina noticed was the lack of a table, and the other three dragons eating on the floor like in japan and Indian cultures. She gave Michael a questioning look, but he failed to notice.
"Good morning your highness." The three dragons said in unison, each one sharing the same scared look that Michael had when he saw her. Nina leaned heavily on the wall as Michael went to fix her a plate of breakfast, looking at each one in turn as she stood with her crutch.
"What's wrong with you guys? Why are you using monarchy language while talking to me?" Nina questioned, "Also, where is the table?" She asked, gesturing to the now empty space where their circular table used to stand. Amy and Maria shared a knowing look while John simply fiddled with his white-and-black plaid shirt.
"Well," Amy muttered, avoiding Nina's greenish-blue eyes as she continued hesitantly, "Last night, your soul awoke, and she kind of rotted the table into a puddle of goo. Also, you kind of scared us last night." Amy explained, flashing Nina a quick, uncomfortable smile before returning to staring at her caramel colored hands. Just as she was pondering this, Michael walked over and handed her a plate of eggs and two strips of bacon, but for some reason the sight of the delicious food made Nina's stomach churn with the ominous threat of throwing up. Standing against the wall, Nina held her plate, but didn't move to touch the food until finally, Michael took it away, noticing her sick expression.
"Wait, how did my soul awaken? I didn't even know your soul could awaken." Nina asked, thinking aloud as she waited for Amy's response.
"Usually, the soul of an immortal lays dormant until they reach a specific level of maturity. Last night your soul woke up and took over your body, it was like flicking a switch on your personality." Maria explained, visibly shivering at the bad memory.
Nina thought this over for a few moments, trying to reach back and remember what happened, but all she remembered was the sea of darkness she had dreamt of, and the small child with the ominous smile that crushed her in her dream. "Is it possible to see your soul inside of your own body while they are awakened?" Nina asked, picking at the loose strings of the lace edge of her nighty. The four dragons who still sat on the floor all gave each other nervous looks before John finally spoke.
"It isn't unheard of, but usually when your soul awakens you more or less feel like you're falling asleep and are having the best, most vivid dream ever." He explained, running a hand through his thinning hair as he spoke. "But i didn't have a good dream, i dreamt of a small child in chains in a sea of darkness, she looked almost like me but she had a torn smile and almost looked like she was dying." Nina explained, her greenish-blue eyes shining with confusion as she looked at them. The three looked at each other once again, sharing a concerned look for the millionth time, it was starting to annoy Nina to no ends.
"The child you saw is what your soul actually looks like, she died when she was only six years old, so she physically looks like a child, even though she is truly ten million years old." Amy explained, leaning on Michael, letting him smooth her hair as she spoke. Great, Nina had a child for a soul.
