Waking up to the sound of a telephone isn't the most delightful thing in the morning. I get up, stretch, and grab the phone. "Hello," I say drowsily. "Yes, I'm looking for a Mary Rainer. It's long distance." the operator said.
Long distance? Why would she be talking to someone long distance? She doesn't have a whole lot of family left. So who would be calling long distance?
I look for her in the flat, and I don't see her at all. "Um she's not here at the moment. Can I take a message?" I say. There was a pause. "That won't be necessary the caller will contact her again later. Thank you, Goodbye."
"Goodbye?" I am so confused. Why would someone from a long distance be calling Mary and not even leave a message? Something is suspicious.
I was sitting in the chair drinking some water, and reading the Bible, then Mary comes in the door with a few bags of stuff. "Look who decided to show up." I said.
She rolls her eyes and says, "I went on some errands, I didn't want to wake you up." She puts three of the bags in her room, and comes out with the other two. She gives me a sly look and says, "So how was your evening?"
I sigh with contentment, and said, "Everything I wanted it to be. We ate, read books, talked, gazed at the stars." She looks at me from putting away some food (a few fruits, vegetables, and rice).
"Does anything from your agenda involve kissing?" I look away with sheepishness. "Well maybe."
She makes a sarcastic sound. "Harshly or softly?" "Softly then Harshly."
"Did he start or did you start?" "It was a group effort."
"Are you in love?"
I stopped and finally said, "Maybe. I just maybe be in love." "Hmm sounds like you guys have a case of the puppy love." "Yes doctor thank you for the prescription. Should I use over the counter or a specialty cocktail?" I respond sarcastically. "You don't have to be that way about it Julia." Mary said.
"Well you don't have to know everything at every moment." I told her.
I go into the shower this morning, and I hear her talking on the phone. I suppose that is the long distance telephone call. The Lord is pressing on my heart to see what Mary is up to because it doesn't feel right.
I hear her better when I get out of the shower, and try to listen better at the conversation. She was speaking in German. Fat chance Julia. I must learn German.
James said in one of his entries that one of the best weapons to existence is knowledge, and my father thrived on that philosophy. He lived that philosophy. Learning more and more will be my biggest ally.
The next time I find Evan is Monday. Just like we had said we would.
"Hello Miss Julia, how are you today?" Evan asked.
"Fine, but I need to ask you for a small...well, a big favor." I responded. He smiled and said, "Well come to my place and we can talk about it."
