the woods

"I told you not to go into the woods,

I told you that he wasn't any good."

She never really believed in myths. Vampires, Faeries, and Witches never were realistic to her.

Strolling down the dimly empty road, the girl wasn't eager to get back to the apartment.

After all, she was going to be alone regardless.

Her phone vibrated in my pocket and she pulled it out, to see it was her friend, Thalia.

"Corrine, you better be at home right now," her friend scolded from the other line.

"I'm halfway there, don't worry," Corrine said as she walked leisurely across the street.

"Don't worry?" Her friend let out an exasperated sigh. "You give me too many reasons to worry."

Corrine looked at the woods next to her. Often she'd take a shortcut through them to get back, but it was nighttime.

Rolling her eyes, she carefully stepped into the forest and started to walked across them.

About five minutes into the walk, she heard a twig snap nearby her.

She froze for a second, before quickening her pace.

Another twig snapped that sounded extremely close to her. Her head snapped towards the direction the noise came from.

Her eyes widened, and her jaw dropped.

A large, yellow-eyed wolf was staring at her through the bushes.

Corrine did the only thing she could think of.

She screamed.

The wolf growled and she took this as an opportunity to run away. The wolf bounded after her and she knew she didn't stand a chance.

She screamed again as she was slammed against the ground.

Flipping herself over to try and get up, she writhed on the forest floor in a struggle.

The wolf's jaws were in close proximity to her face, and she could feel the hot breath of the animal as it tried to nip at her.

The wolf's claw scratched at her, and it ripped her jacket and pierced her side.

She groaned out in pain, as she still continued to put up a weak struggle against the beast.

It scratched her again, leaving a gash on her leg. Corrine hyperventilated and started to come to the realisation that she was going to die.

Suddenly, the wolf was shoved roughly off of her, and Corrine was flung backwards.

Her head hit the back of a tree stump, and her vision became hazy and blurry.

In the distance, she heard a whine and bounding paws running away before her eyes rolled into the back of her head.

The second wolf that attacked the first one shifted back into its human form and stood naked in the forest next to the girl.

He noticed her limp and unconscious form and he sighed as he picked her up from the ground.

"Stupid girl," he murmured, brushing the hair out of her face. "Stupid, stupid girl."

ii.

Corrine woke up with gasp. Sweat coated her forehead, and she was breathing hard.

She closed her eyes and sighed. She had another nightmare.
