Seeing as Aidan would rather ride with his boyfriend then her, Evelyn was forced to sit in a car with Hannah, Beth, Nick (a complete asshole who was in her English class and had once tried to hit on her), and Joseph (Nick's friend who was even worse). She understood that Aidan was just excited to see his best friend again after two years apart, but he knew how he was practically the only person she could stand here, yet he still abandoned her.
Evelyn was not one to forget slights, even the smallest ones, and she could hold a grudge like hell. Sitting next to the left window, she was grateful that she hadn't been squeezed in the middle as it would've have been absolute torture to sit in the midst of the noisy conversation that was taking place between the other four people.
But it was tough luck if she wanted to be excluded out of the conversation entirely.
"So what did Jace say to you, Ev?" Nick asked in the driver's seat.
Damn you. Evelyn thought, wondering if she would dare kick the back of his chair, had he not been the one driving.
"Just tried and persuade me to ditch my lesson." she responded.
Well, it's not a complete lie. He did try to 'persuade' me. And he succeeded.
"Yeah, who needs lessons when you're hanging out with people like us?" Joe snickered, scrolling through his phone. "You've never seen Jace before, have you?"
"Nope." Evelyn answered.
"He's sooo hot." Nick remarked. "If I didn't have a girlfriend, I'd be gay for that guy."
"That's nice." she answered, sarcastically.
Nick's girlfriend, Rose, was in the hospital getting surgery for her leg today and Evelyn couldn't help but feel like Nick was kind of a douche for making a comment like that. But it was his decision and she didn't want to meddle in his affairs.
"Dude, Victoria's gonna flip out when they see each other." Beth told them, putting her phone in her jacket pocket. "I swear, she will actually blow a fuse."
"Moretti or Davidson?" Evelyn asked as there were two Victorias in the junior class.
"Moretti," replied Beth. "Oh, you weren't here, but the Jace and Victoria have had a crush on each other ever since the sixth grade. It was really cute, actually."
"They never dated though." Hannah added. "But ever since Jace left for California, he always messaged her and Snapchatted and stuff. They never lost touch, not even once. I don't know why she's not here today."
"Maybe she didn't know." Nick suggested. "Jace didn't come to school on Friday. He only came in the afternoon during practice."
"There's no way she doesn't know." Beth pointed out. "They're like lovebirds I'm pretty sure he would tell her he was home the minute he came back."
"True," Hannah shrugged. "He might ask her out once he's back at school and I ship it, but I'm also seriously really scared for the other girls' reactions. I swear, if he does ask her out, half of the female population at our school will exit the premise."
Evelyn, who had been listening more than talking this whole time, reflected on what she knew about Victoria Moretti, which wasn't a lot other than that the two of them were in a silent competition for valedictorian and the number one spot on class ranks.
Along with being Evergrass High's richest girl, she was also one of the prettiest and smartest, which was the ultimate combination. Although the two girls rarely interacted with each other, Evelyn sometimes wondered if Victoria was the real nemesis she was dealing with. Beth was annoying and fake, yes, but she was only enemies with her on popularity and dating terms and those didn't really matter to Evelyn. Her top priority at the moment was to graduate at the top of her class, score well on her upcoming SATs and AP exams and get into an Ivy League, moving somewhere far far away from this place. Evelyn aimed big and was dreaming of being admitted to UPenn, but the stakes were high and Evergrass was filled with elite brainiacs who were all dreaming of their Ivy League acceptances. Beth might have been very preoccupied with boys, but she was taking all AP courses and getting straight As and Bs in them, which wasn't too shabby. Evelyn had a 4.9 GPA so far, and was tied with Victoria at the moment.
