(It is early the next morning. DIANNE, in her nightgown, is standing at her door. VIVIAN, looking sloppy, is just barely making her way out the door. DIANNE waves at her one final time, and then closes the door. She puts her fingers to her temple, clearly hungover. The doorbell rings again before she can turn away. With a groan, DIANNE turns back to open her door. NIKKI is standing there.)
NIKKI: Uh, hi. Are you... How are you?
DIANNE: I am hungover as all hell. How are you? Come in, please.
NIKKI: I'm... I'm okay. I'm just... there's something I need to talk to you about, though. And I hope, I mean... I hope you aren't upset with me when I tell you about it.
DIANNE: Are you trying to upset me or make me anxious? Because the later is like... you know, it's working.
NIKKI: No, that's not my intent. I'm sorry. I just... (She sits down at the island, hiding her face.) Dianne, I need to tell you that I can't help you hook up with other women anymore.
(There is silence for a moment as DIANNE processes this.)
DIANNE: Why?
NIKKI: I can't do it anymore, Dianne. I... (She struggles to find the right words.) I can't... be a part of you cheating on your husband anymore. It isn't right. I won't do it.
DIANNE: Oh, Nikki, please. Don't tell me your conscious is kicking in now. It's been months. What's really going on?
NIKKI:That's all it is.
DIANNE: I don't believe you. Did you do something?
NIKKI: No, Dianne-
DIANNE: Are you really just going to leave me like this? Without warning? Leave me in the streets, just like everyone else?
NIKKI: What do you mean, just like everyone else? Dianne you literally have a new woman in here every other night. You're the one that kicks people back out to the streets.
DIANNE: How could you do this to me?
NIKKI: Dianne, please don't be upset with me. I'm just trying to do what I think is right.
DIANNE: (After a beat. Then, with defeat:) Fine, okay. That's alright, I get it. I do.
NIKKI: I'm sorry.
DIANNE: Does this mean we can't have lunch anymore?
NIKKI: I don't know. I just...
(DIANNE moves to the other side of the island to stand closer to NIKKI.)
DIANNE: Nikki, you're my best friend. Please don't just abandon me like this.
NIKKI: Dianne, can you... I mean, it's just... I have to do this.
DIANNE: But... why...?
NIKKI: Because, Dianne! Because- I'm in love with you, okay? Because I'm stupid enough to have gotten too close to you, and not only do you have a husband, but you sleep around with everyone. I can't deal with it anymore.
DIANNE: In love with me...?
NIKKI: Yes, okay? I am. So I can't be around you anymore. I have to keep my distance so I can get over this.
(There is another moment of silence.)
DIANNE: What... What if I don't want you to get over this?
