The Fight With The Demons

A couple of weeks later. I still had flashbacks sometimes but they were getting less. It had been a gloomy day, clouds all over the sky and the air was very humid.

Catarina had given us a job for the day. Demons had been sighted down at the beach, not even too far away from where we had sat a couple of weeks ago when we ate dinner with Chris.

Andrew and I had changed into our leather gear now we finished putting runes on one another. Chris wanted to come to. I was actually a bit surprised, given that his parents had been killed by demons just a couple of weeks ago. When our parents died it took me long enough to be able to go near demons again, but I guess people cope differently. Also, a pair of extra hands and an extra brain could probably not be a bad thing, so why not?

The beach was unusually empty today, then again mundies kind of sensed danger, as well, so they probably just stayed away. The sun was trying very hard to come through, trying to warm my skin, but somehow it didn't work. I told myself that I won't be cold for long, I was about to go into battle, of course I wouldn't be cold.

Everything happened so fast. A demon scream, then they attacked. Around half a dozen of Kuri demons, their teeth, which come out of their eye sockets, dripping with poison.

So now don't get me wrong, we are an excellent team and these were just a few demons, so actually it shouldn't have been a problem. But it was. I don't know why, but these guys were harder to kill.

There were only two left. Ok, so having a Parabatai is generally a good thing, you know, Parabatai runes, combined strength and all of that stuff. But then again, when your Parabatai is wounded, like, heavily wounded, you're in pain, too.

Andrew was fighting one of these guys while I fought the other, Christopher coming at him from behind. I was just about to ram my seraph blade into it when an agonizing pain rushed through my body. I bend over, not being able to do anything else, and I heard Andrew scream in pain. I couldn't breath for a couple of seconds then I looked back up. Andrew was lying there, in a puddle of his own blood, the demon coming at him again.

Although my body felt like it was on fire I took my last strength and just ran. I saw that Chris had killed the other demon from the corner of my eye. The demon was just about to attack Andrew again but I took what was left of my strength and rammed my seraph blade into it. It vanished with a scream.

I broke down, my whole body was in pain and the Parabatai rune on my chest burned almost unbearably. I crawled over to Andrew, Chris was already standing over him, taking a look.

Andrews side bled, the demon had bitten him and now the poison already ran through his body. Slowly, ever so slowly the pain in my own body faded, but only minimal, just enough so that I could get up and walk again.

"Come on, we have to get him back to the Institute!" I gasped and took Andrews hand, trying to lift him up. Christopher helped me and to be fair, he carried most of Andrew, I just couldn't, I was still in such pain. It seemed to take forever to get back to the Institute but it was actually just half a mile, when we arrived I broke down again, completely exhausted. I blacked out.

We had just arrived at the Institute. Miami was just so different from Idris, who would have thought. "Andrew, Victoria, let's go see your room, why don't we?" Mom said, smiling at us. She knew it was weird for us. We were the only Shadowhunters here. We had lost a lot of people in The Dark War and now new people had to go to the Institutes. The clave had decided that we were old enough now so that we could properly start training, though my mom thought ten-year-olds were still quite a bit young. We came here anyways.

They had already told us that we would be getting a room together, they had refurnished it just for us. And when I saw it, I instantly fell in love. Our beds were on either side of the room, there was a wardrobe for each one of us, as well as a desk for each one. Over the bed on one side of the room was a window, the morning sun shining through it and on the other side of the room was another door, leading to our bathroom. "It's wonderful!" I said, already deciding that I would be taking the bed with no window over it, Andrew would want the other one anyways.

Back in Idris we had shared a room already and I didn't want it to change. Andrew and I just worked together so well, so why separate? "I'm glad you like it. Andrew dear, how about you?" Mom asked. Andrew nodded, looking around with big eyes. Mom smiled happily. "Okay, now, there is still someone I want you both to meet. She'll be your tutor from now on, come on." Mom said and guided us through the Institute, back to the office with the portal in it, through which we had come. There was a woman now, she seemed quite young still, maybe around 25 years old. She smiled at us kindly. "Andrew, Victoria, this is Catarina Rosecross. Your new tutor."
