The kiss lasts for what feels like hours. I don't want to let go. Mark eventually pulls away and smiles at me. "I'm gonna miss you." He says and let's go of me. My body suddenly feels so cold without him. Mr. Thomas stares at me wide-eyed as I exit the room, not making eye contact with him. That better keep him away from me.
I say hello to my new patient and ask her if she needs anything. "What's your name?" She asks, tilting her head slightly sideways. "My name isn't important right now. What is yours?" I ask, since I haven't had any time to read over the information about her. She looks around eighteen years old, very young for being in this part of the hospital. "My name is Sophia. It's nice to meet you." She says. "What a pretty name." I say and smile at her. She smiles back and says she should get some rest. I nod and close the door.
I am stuck sitting at my desk for the rest of the day, doodling on a piece of paper. "I'm sorry I forgot my charger. How was I supposed to know you forgot to charge your phone last night?" Lily exclaims. "I know, I know, it's okay. I need to get back to drawing anyway." I respond. "It sucks you got moved to another patient. It was your lunch break!" Lily almost yells. "Calm down, it's okay. Mark is getting out soon." I say, sketching a model of a body on the paper. "Sorry. It's just so stupid- oh my God, that is amazing!" Lily says while standing up to look at my paper.
"How did you do that?" She asks. I shrug. "I don't know, I just kinda did it." Lily looks at me. "I didn't know you could draw! That is so amazing!" I smile. Lily sits back down and gets back on her computer. I stop drawing for a second. "Hey, can you look to see who has Mark now?" I ask. She pulls something up and says, "Just Amanda. Why, are you jealous?" She teases. I look around. "Have you seen her at all in the last half an hour?" I ask, standing up. "I wouldn't recommend that." Lily says. I just look down the hall and start walking.
I peak through the window to see Amanda bending over Mark in a seductive way. I feel a sharp pain in my chest. I involuntarily open the door and yell at her. She stares at me guiltily and stands back up quickly. She then smirks and struts up to my face. "What are ya' gonna do? Tell on me? Mr. Thomas likes me way more than he likes you, how else would I have gotten you out of here?" She looks at her nails and waits for a reply. Mark just sits on the bed staring at us. Anger boils up inside of me until I feel like I am about to burst. Words come flying into my head that I want to say to her, but I wait for the right ones to come to mind.
"Well, I hate to say it, but the person you are after, if you even know his name, likes me more than he likes you." Amanda just rolls her eyes. I shrug and tap her shoulder. She looks up at me and watches as I walk over to Mark's bed and sit on his lap, wrapping my arms around his neck. Amanda stares at me, shocked. But, after a few seconds she smirks again. "Oh yeah? Anyone can sit on another person's lap. Whether they like it or not is out of the question." I just look over to Mark and nod. He smiles and kisses me on the lips, wrapping his arms around me.
Amanda tries to talk herself into saying that doesn't matter, but fails miserably. We kiss the whole time she is talking, soon forgetting she is in the room. Once I hear the door close, I separate and smile at Mark. "Thank you." I say. He laughs and replies, "No, thank you. That was Hell." We both laugh and I get off of his lap. Mark grabs my hand to stop me from walking away. "Before you go, can I give you my number?" His face goes slightly red. I smile and say, "smooth. But of course you can." Mark laughs and fakes a sad face. "Shut up. I didn't have any time to think of a pick up line." We both laugh as Mark writes down his number on a napkin he got from his lunch. I take it and walk out, feeling happier than I have felt in a long time.
Later that Night
After running to the store and buying flower seeds to plant around Fisher's grave, I pull into my driveway and run inside to plug in my phone. This is like a dream. I lay on my bed and hug my sheets, playing that first kiss over and over in my head. I smile and open my eyes, standing up to get dinner prepared. When I walk into the kitchen, instead of getting sad from looking at Fisher's water bowl, I smile thinking about all of the great times we had.I sit at my table with my laptop and a warm bowl of mac-and-cheese and look up YouTube. I type in Mark into the search bar and click on the name Markiplier. I scroll through his videos for one that seems interesting and click on one called "Try Not To Laugh Challenge #2". I almost spit macaroni out of my mouth by the end but keep myself contained.
I binge watch through his videos and eventually close my laptop at 11:24. It was worth it. I look at my phone with a piece of paper on it and hit myself on the head. I completely forgot to text him. I turn on my phone and type in his number, checking and double checking to make sure it's right. I then type in who it is and to have a good night/morning. I turn my phone back off and close my eyes, officially ending the day.
The Next Morning
I sit down at my desk and pull out my phone, turning it on. I smile at the text Mark sent me saying good morning and make a contact for him. Lily turns to me and looks down. "I hear today is Mark's last day." She says sadly. I smile. "Thank God, he can finally get out of here." Lily looks at me confused. "Won't you miss him?" She asks. I just smirk and say, "I got his number." Lily laughs and slides her chair over to me to elbow my side, "look at you! Getting a boyfriend! Good for you!" I laugh and look down. "Speaking of, Amanda isn't here today. Whatever you did really spooked her. So you get to take care of him for one more day." I grin and stand up. "In that case, I'm gonna go say good morning." Lily smiles and watches me walk into room 16 for possibly the last time.Mark looks at me and smiles, standing up and giving me a hug. "I finally get to leave." He says. I put my hand on the back of his head. "I'm still gonna miss you. We are going to have to do something together when you are stronger." Mark lets go of me and looks at me funny. "Stronger? You saying I'm not strong?" He flexes but stops quickly, since his arms can barely hold an empty suitcase. I start laughing, Mark faking a sad face again. "Since I'm so fragile, can you help me pack my stuff?" He asks. I nod and start picking up his stuff.
Tyler comes to pick him up and we say our goodbyes. Mark gives me one last kiss before he leaves, Tyler looking at him surprised. We all have a laugh one last time before Mark exits the building, driving away from the hospital. I talk with Lily for the rest of the day, since Sophia and my other patient are both sleeping. I feel empty without Mark here, like a part of me is missing. I ignore the feeling and draw my human model I made yesterday into two people holding hands.
