It all started with a call from the sheriff's station. My erratic mother had come into my room crying, shaking me out of my peaceful sleep. There had been a murder, she said. It was someone my age, someone who I went to school with. Carly Johnson, that had been her name. Five foot seven, skinny yet muscular, well manicured, wavy brown-red hair, dark brown eyes, C-cup boobs, fair skin, and last but not least she was the cheer leading captain at our school.
"Mom, go away I'm trying to sleep!" I groaned rolling over in my bed.
"God Lilly you are so heartless, how did I raise such an insensitive wench?" She questioned herself.
"Remember mom, its nature and nurture. You gave me half of these genes!" I covered my face with my pillow. My mom's job was a shrink, the kind where she can be called a Doctor, but can't prescribe any medicine. Too bad for me, if I could be medicated 24/7, I would be.
"If I hadn't read that study that swearing at your kids made them dumber, then I would be swearing up a storm young lady," She said storming out of the room.
"Haha, love you too!" I shouted after her. Can't go back to sleep now, now there was work to do. I slipped out from underneath the warm covers and practically dragged myself to my closet. Inside everything looked just about the same. I grabbed a tight pair of dark jeans, a black t-shirt, and a red and black striped cardigan. I dug around in my closet, looking for my equipment.
"Aidan!" I screamed, "What the hell did I tell you about touching my camera!"
"I didn't lay a finger on your camera I swear!" He screamed back throwing his hands in the air.
"Don't lie to me you little shit." I squinted my eyes at him, and then scanned the room. "Ah ha!"
I walked through the mountains of dirty clothes to where I saw my camera bag strap poking out from underneath his bed. I pulled on the woven material and the bag came out nice and easy into my hands. I hugged the expensive camera to my chest and let out a sigh of relief.
"What? I didn't touch the camera, only the bag." He said shrugging.
"Look, I know what you're doing. I was fourteen once too, but it's not funny really. Not unless you wanna fork up 600 dollars if it breaks." I crossed my arms.
"SIX HUNDRED DOLLARS?! YOU'VE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!" Aidan was appalled at how much it cost.
"Yeah buddy," I said ruffing up his hair. "Gotta have the good stuff if you wanna make it in the journalism business."
"Is there really a dead body?" Aidan asked me.
"Yeah, mom got a call from Sheriff Daniels this morning." I made a face of disgust.
"That's cool, I've never seen a dead person." He said.
"I heard she got her head cut off," I whispered to him.
"Woah, no way! That's nuts." Aidan was shocked.
"Yup, our town's very first murder." I said laughing weirdly. "I gotta go little man."
"No breakfast?" He asked me.
"Rule number one of journalism, never see a dead body on a full stomach!" I turned away and walked down the hall to the door that lead to the garage. I pressed the button that opened the door and climbed into my red VW Bug.
I honked the horn of my car as I passed my fathers house. He and mom had been split up since she had a nervous breakdown and threw a full wine bottle at his head, which shattered all over the floor. Ever since then he made sure to stay as far from my mother as he possibly could. Aidan says dad is smart, I just say he has no balls.
When I had arrived at the crime scene, it had looked like something out of a movie of a popular tv drama. There was yellow caution tape all around the pond, people grouped in small clusters all around the perimeter, and a small ambulance for the dead body. Sheriff Daniels stood off to the side talking to one of his deputy's.
"Morning Sheriff, mind if I ask a few questions?" I had my camera recording him.
"Not now Lilly, can't you see this is a serious matter girl." He said shoving the camera out of my way.
"Fine, I'll just have to see things for myself." I said moving away from him, and under the yellow tape. I began to wildly click to button on my camera taking as many pictures as possible while running around the pond. Behind me chased a bunch of jelly doughnut, coffee drinking, heavyset police officers. "Catch me if you can boys!"
"Don't forget we know where you live." They yelled after me.
