I held the freezing cold boy in my arms, his body shaking. Aidan's clothes were soaking wet, he had been riding the whole night. I stood up from the ground, groaning as the skin on my knees tore even more. The blood still ran warm down my legs and dripped into the snow. Seconds later a beam of light swept across us. Carter came running up to the both of us, he threw his arms around my neck and laughed loudly.
"Holy shit! It's great to see you both. I can't believe you found him!" And then Carter noticed the blood the dripped into the snow. "You're hurt?"
"Yeah, I tripped trying to run after you." I said grunting as I tried to shift my weight off the leg that was hurt worse.
"Here, Aidan you must be freezing!" Carter shucked off his outer coat and draped it around my brothers shaking shoulders. Next Carter whipped out his phone and called the police. "Hi, um this is Carter. We found Aidan, the missing boy, and we are going to need an ambulance. I'll send you our location."
After Carter hung up the phone we made our way back towards the road. The journey was long, and very cold. With each step my legs felt worse and worse. In the snow behind us there were streaks of blood. The red was startling to see against the stark white. Just when I didn't think I could walk any further, I heard the sound of sirens. Beams of light from flashlights swept the edge of the thick woods. I moved my hand up to shield my eyes as we emerged back onto the street. An ambulance and two cop cars were there, the EMT's ran towards us with thermal blankets.
"The girl is bleeding, and the boy is suffering from hypothermia." The EMT who was named Janice said to her partner Max. "Hi sweetheart can you tell me your name?"
"His name is Aidan," I said. "And I'm Lillian. I'm his older sister and guardian."
"Alright, we are going to have to get your brother on a stretcher and take him to the nearest hospital." Janice said to me.
"That's fine. Carter, take my car and follow us there." I said handing him my keys.
"Sounds good," Carter said taking them from my shaking hands. He held my hand as I watched my delirious brother being strapped down. When they loaded him up I climbed into the back of the ambulance, thankful to be off my feet.
The ride there was short, but it felt like hours before we got there. They rushed my brother into the emergency doors to the hospital. His body temperature was too low, they were afraid his heart would stop. They covered my baby brother in blankets, carefully trying not to warm him up too fast since that could be life threatening as well. While the nurses and doctors were tending to my brother I was taken to a separate room.
"Could you sit on the table please?" The nurse asked me.
"Yeah sure," I said carefully sitting down.
"We are going to have to cut your pants off, and remove your shoes. Is that okay?" She asked me.
"Yeah that's fine." I said grunting as the jeans moved across my skin. The nurse, who was named Linda, pulled out a pair of gleaming scissors. She carefully began to cut the pant legs starting at the bottom. I cringed as the got closer to my knees, the material of the jeans had become embedded into my skin.
"I know this hurts dear, but we gotta clean the wound or it will get infected," Linda said. She changed her gloves and took out a pair of tweezers to remove the rocks and wood pieces from my knees.
By the time she was done stitching my knees, and covering them with gauze my brother was back at his normal body temperature. I slowly walked out of the small room, trying my best not to move my legs. I shuffled across the ER to where my brother was, the door to his room was shut. I pushed on his door and walked in. Aidan was watching cartoons on the small T.V. covered in a mound of blankets.
"Hey bud," I said crawling up next to him on the bed.
"He sis," He said to me.
"How are you feeling?" I asked him.
"Cold, do you know why I'm here?" He asked me.
"Do you not remember sweetheart?"
"No, the last thing I remember was falling asleep on the couch in your room."
