I go to a school that houses about three hundred people in total. The only extra curricular activities we have are football, basketball, volleyball, baseball, cheer leading, and thanks to me a shitty school news paper. Although I had been going to the same school district for my whole life, the question always was who is Lillian Denmark? Practically no one knew my name, the only friend I had moved away after sixth grade. This left me invisible, a muted out star that sat in the basement of our school day after day cranking out black and white papers that no one ever read.
"Lily, get anything on the body that was found in the pond yesterday?" James asked. He was new to the school, just moved here from Chicago. Tall, lanky, golden brown hair, blue eyes, junior.
"Got a few good pictures, it's true her head really was missing." I said handing him the camera. He plugged it into the computer and began uploading it onto the hard drive. I hadn't decided if we were friends yet, or just work colleagues.
"Personally I don't feel bad for the bitch, she knocked my lunch out of my hands the first day of school," He said looking over the images.
"Anything good?" I asked him sipping at a very hot cup of tea.
"Eh, there's one. Also, how can you drink that shit Lilly?" He pointed to my cup.
"Years and years of my mother giving it to me when I'm stress out." I said standing behind him to look at the monitor. "Blow the image up?"
"Sure thing," He double clicked on the mouse and the picture filled the whole screen. "What the hell is that?"
I studied the photo, biting my lip as I did. There seemed to be an odd reflection in the water. "Is that a horse?"
"Looks like it Lil, who the hell even rides horses anymore?" He laughed.
"That's so weird, I don't remember seeing one...but then again I was running like a chicken with my head cut off." I cringed.
"Wow you totally did not," He poked me in the side.
"I totally just did make a headless joke..." I frowned at myself.
"You are horrible Lillian." He laughed like a mad man and pushed the chair out from the desk.
I walked over to my desk and sat down. No one had been in this room since summer, so most of the desks still had dust on them, including mine. I slid a stapler out of my way and adjusted the keyboard just so before turning on my computer. The fan within the base of the computer sputtered to life, sending dust flying through the air. Even though I tried to fight it I ended up sneezing anyways.
"Bless you!" James yelled out.
"Thanks," I mumbled opening a word document. I thought about what I say, the murder was too fresh for there to be any information. The only thing I had to go one were my pictures, and the fact that she was floating headless in a dirty pond. Then there was a knock at the door.
Three girls wearing matching cheer leading outfits walked in. Beatrice stood at the front, on either side flanked the terrible twins Monica, and Natalie. They always seemed to walk as if they thought they were in a music video. As shaking, hips twitching, lips slathered in sticky lip gloss, and hair always in a high pony.
"Lilly," Beatrice said my name drawing it out for dramatic effect.
"B, Monica, Natalie. What brings you to my shit hole of an office?" I asked them.
"We wrote this for your newspaper, skank." Monica said walking over with a piece of notebook paper in her hand.
"Oh lovely, you trying to write poetry again dear? You do remember what happened last time you tried that?" I smirked.
"The Principal already had a heart condition you bitch," She shoved the paper into my open hand. It crumpled up slightly. "And its not a poem."
"Oh thank god," I sighed and leaned back in my chair. "So what exactly is it?"
"It's something we wrote for Carly now that she is gone." B said with her hands on her hips.
"Is it something along the lines of, 'glad the bitch is dead because now I get to be the head of the squad'?" I laughed at my own joke.
"No, its all the good things about Carly. Someone needs to hear them since she had a hard time showing the good side of herself." Natalie said, her eyes were red and puffy.
"Hmm, I didn't think she had a good bone in her body," I said standing up from my desk.
"Now if you ladies don't mind, we have work to do." James said herding them towards the door.
"I can't stand them," I mumbled.
"Damn, those bitches are fine!" James yelled out once they had left.
"They would eat you for breakfast James, don't even try." I said waving my hand in the air.
"Aw come on! They might have a change of heart Lilly." He pleaded.
"Not a good idea man." I said going back to my computer. I took a sip of my tea, great, it was cold now.
