Autumn

32 1 1

Hot mugs of tea and cinnamon buns,

Wrapping up warm and staying out late.

Fighting with conkers in the back yard,

That is the Autumn I remember.

Little black noses and red bushy tails,

Screams of delight float in the air.

Hiding away to ignore weather warnings,

That is the Autumn I remember.

Gloved hands together, looking up at the sky,

Pumpkin spiced lattes sipped in cafés.

Bundled up warm in front of the fire,

That is the Autumn I'll never forget.

Mulled wine mixed with the disinfectant smell,

Each leafy crunch dampening my spirits.

Soggy wet socks and visiting hours,

That is the Autumn I'll never forget.

Woolly hats and short night walks,

Breathless in shock at finding some warmth.

Shaky pale hands and a frail looking face,

That is the last Autumn you'd ever remember.

In front of the fire heating my toes,

Falling through misery while sat on my own.

Missing your laughter to warm up my heart,

This is the final Autumn that we'll be apart.
