Okay, this is really short, but like I said it was due tomorrow, but my dearest sister, @_sunsetgirl_ celebrates her b-day today, so this is a gift to her!

Also, I uploaded this extra-thingy - it's going to be a mix of different short POV s of scenes from this book, and the first one is Riccy - The reaping day. Enjoy, and leave a comment if there's a POV you want, and we'll see if I do it!

Chapter 27

I can't breathe. How the hell did they catch Axara? I didn't think we were this close to the Cornucopia.

Axara meets my gaze, and I see the knife has cut a little into her throat, drawing a small line of blood. That fills me with anger. How dare they hurt her?

I won't let them get away with hurting her.

"Thank you for the invite," I say calmly, trying to control my anger. It's three against one, and if I do something stupid, Axara's life is in danger.

I can't lose her too, not now. Not so quickly after Faith.

"I see you lost Willa." The sentence is completely neutral – not offensive in any way. Just emotionless.

"She was stupid enough to step on a snake while we were hunting by the rocks," Drew says in a bored voice. "Died in like ten minutes."

I shake my head. Her mentor could have gotten her something for the bite. Or maybe her mentor doesn't have the knowledge about poisons to do that. I'm so glad Caro is a friend of Evan and me.

"Well, come closer," Drew says. I don't move, trying to asses the situation. I do need to get closer, though I could hit him from here with the only weapon in my hands right now – the bow.

"Come closer." Drew's voice is sharper. "Or we'll hurt your ally." I have to play it smart, lie.

"And you think I care if she's hurt?"

"You don't?" Drew seems genuinely surprised. I see Clarie roll her eyes at Drew's stupidity.

"She's trying to distract you, idiot!" she hisses, and hits his stomach with her elbow.

"Ow! What did you say, bitch?" Drew turns to glare at Clarie.

Now this is the distraction I need.

My arrow flies swiftly from the bow, hitting Marco in the calf - only injuring, but not dangerously close to Axara. He yelps, and lets go of Axara. She immediately runs out of his reach, towards me. Drew looks up, and is about to run after her, when my second arrow hits the ground in front of him. He curses loudly.

Claire takes up the chase, not bothering to be afraid of the arrows – my first hit, Marco's calf, was a quite lucky shot, and she seems to realize it. No, my arrows may not hit the target.

But my knife certainly does.

Or should I call it Faith's knife?

Either way, it buries itself into her side, and she falls to the ground, gasping. I think I punctured her lung. I hope I did, at least.

But I don't have the time to think, because Axara has reached me, and we make a mad dash towards the river, Drew following us, leaving Clarie behind to die. That's how much he cares about her. Not at all. The Career's alliances are not made out of real friendship, they're made out of the thoughts about possible threats. And for Drew, Clarie is just another threat dealt with. Maybe it wasn't him who dealt with her, but she's gone anyway. And now he's focusing on the new threat.
