“Zarah Michelson we are going to be late, hurry up!” my mother shouted from below as I was straightening my hair. Today was the day of Calum's arrival, along with all the other boys. Cal's mother arranged a small welcome home surprise party, which I was invited too. Of course at first I denied the offer, but my mother refused for us to not go. Gathering the rest of my things, took a deep breath, trying to control the nerves that ran through my body. I hadn't seen him in forever, and today that was going to change- everything was going to change. Looking myself over in the mirror before I went down stairs, making sure I look decent. My hair was straightened; I was wearing a plain maroon crop top with a black high waisted skater skirt. I was short for a girl my age, and a little chubby, but thinner than I had been a year ago. When Calum left I weighed about 145 pounds, now I weigh about 119 pounds, equaling to about 25 pounds less. Rushing down stairs to the front door I slipped on my white converse and went into the car where my mother was waiting for me.
As we drove to the Hoods house, the closer we got, the more my worries began to kick in. What if he forgot who I was? What if he just didn’t care about me anymore? What if he's not the same Calum I knew? Leaning my head on the window, I took deep breathes, reenacting what I was going to do when I saw him.
“Clair!” Mrs. Hood said as she hugged my mother. Unlike me and Cal, they had kept in touch. They've gone out for coffee every Sunday repeatedly, they were practically best friends, kind of like me and Calum are...or were. Entering the Hoods house, old memories of me and Calum filled my mind. The last time I’d been here is when I said goodbye to him, right before the tour. The house was filled with people, his aunts, uncles, the family of the other boys and kids from school. Although I had gone to school with them, I was sure they didn't even know who I was. Feeling out of place, I sat down on the sofa, waiting for Calum to come.
I really don't know what I was expecting. Maybe that he's notice me first when he walked in? Or that it'd be like a movie seen were he runs to me, picking me up and twirling me in the air. I really don’t know, but I was nothing like I imagined. When he and the boys walked through that door, everyone yelled “Surprise” just like every other bombshell event. Then the next thing I know, everyone is attacking him and hugging him. Trying to squish through the crowd to say hi to my best friend, I got trampled over by the crowd. I felt like an idiot, like I wasn’t welcomed there. Needing to get away from the sea of people, I headed upstairs to go the washroom. As I walked through the hall, I noticed Calum’s door half open and no one inside. Stopping in front of the door, memories rushed through my head one again…
“Calum stop it!” I screamed, begging him for him to stop tickling me. Both of his legs were over me, pinning me down on my bed. Squirming in the spot, I kicked my legs trying to get him off me. “Oh you want to play that huh?” he said, grabbing both my ankles with one hand and ticking me with another. “Why are you so strong for?” I laughed, trying to slip out of his grip. “You know you love it” he whispered in my ear, finally stopping. Lying down next to me, he exhaled loudly. “I hate you” I giggled, still laughing as I tried to restore my breath. “I hate you too”
“Excuse me? Hello” I head a deep male voice come from behind me. Zoning back into the moment, I looked at Calum’s doors once again then looked behind me. “Woah” I said in shock, noticing a tall male less than a foot away. Looking up at his face, I swear my heart skipped a beat. “Ashton?” I mumbled, looking at him shockingly. Although I had only met him once previously, he was a lot taller and well, hotter. Titling his head he looked at me confused, “Do I know you? You look really familiar” he asked, placing his hand behind his neck, staring at me intensely. “Um, yeah, I’m a good friend of Calum's, or I was” I said, reminding him. Starring at me for what liked forever, a light bulb finally triggered in his head. “Zarah!” he said excitingly, as if he had just solved a mystery. “Hey Ash” I waved letting out a small smile.
“Dayum, you look all grown up!”
“That's what growing up does to you”
“Well, it did you well”
Letting out a little laugh, I swear my face grew red. The awkward moment of silence filed the air as I looked down at the floor, too shy to look at him. “Have you said hi to him yet?” he asked, breaking the silence. “Um, well, no” I said, not knowing how to explain myself. “I just, maybe he doesn't want to see me?” I sighed, admitting to him, getting the weight of my chest. Just as Ashton was about to say something, another male voice came from the end of the hall. “Did you find the washroom mate?” the voice asked, getting closer. That voice, I recognized that voice. Looking up, I looked behind Ashton, noticing a very familiar face, Calum.
