"Riley! Don't hang up baby, just stay where you are and don't make a sound, just listen to my voice." Riley almost choked on her own breath just waiting under her bed. Auston got Mitch to call 911, he really didn't want to hang up. If this was the last time he got to hear her voice he wasn't letting her go that easily. She can't go, he won't let her go.
"I love you." Auston said. She started to whimper slightly and quietly. "You can't let go just yet, you can fight back baby."
"The police are on their way to your house, Aus." Mitch said coming over to him and putting an arm around his shoulders.
"Why do we have to be in LA?" Auston mumbled quietly, really hoping that Riley didn't hear it.
"Auston, he's coming into the room." She whispered like a mouse.
"Okay baby, just stay calm the police are on the way" He said sweating. She has to stay here, this can't be happening.
"I know you're in here, Riley." Auston recognized the mans voice, as he was talking to his hiding girlfriend. It's her ex boyfriend, Caleb Rhinks.
"Are you still on the phone with the cops?" He whispered to Mitch, Mitch nodded. Auston held out his hand out for the phone and quietly told Riley not to listen to what he was about to say and to just stay focused on staying quiet and out of sight. She didn't answer, which he hoped is a good thing. "Hi, this is Auston Matthews, I'm Riley's boyfriend and I know who the guy is who broke into her house." He said whispering.
"Yes sir, okay who is it?" The lady on the other side asked.
"Caleb Rhinks."
"How do you spell that?" She asked
"C-a-l-e-b R-h-i-n-k-s." Auston said. The lady typed something into her computer and told Auston to stay on the line and update her as things went on. There was a beat of sweat on Auston's forehead, as he waited and listened for something to happen, for sirens that he would be able to hear through the other end of the phone. A minute went by with a little bit of ruffling that was all he heard. There was soon a loud bang and Auston almost screamed, if it wasn't for hearing Riley scream first. "It sounded like a gunshot!" Auston yelled into Mitch's phone. "Something was loud like a gunshot!" Auston wasn't one to cry, but he did start just then.
"She's not dead." Caleb said into Riley's phone. "Yet. But I can promise you she will be. There's only a matter of time before the blood drains from her body, but you won't be able to find her. I'm taking her somewhere that you won't find. And, Auston, I know you're on the phone with the cops, and give them this message for me please. You may know my name, but you will never find me. This is only the beginning." Riley's phone line then went dead and Auston screamed at the top of his lungs.
"Sir! Sir! Please tell me what's going on!" The 911 operator said.
"He shot her, but she's not dead yet. He wanted me to give you a message. You may know his name, but you will never find him. This is only the beginning" Auston started crying even more as the vulgar words left his mouth.
"The authorities are on their way."
"It's too late for that!" Auston cried out. "He's already taken her somewhere, they're gone and I might never see her again, she'll be dead soon, and...there's nothing we can do about it." Auston didn't really come to terms with it, he just said the facts out loud. He felt broken as he realized the girl he loved, and the one he played for almost every day, was not going to be there anymore. She was the one that he wanted, for the rest of his life, but now he can't.
Auston hung up the phone and fell to the floor with his head in his hands, crying non stop. Mitch tried comforting him, but he knew nothing he did would help at this point. Mitch could hear Riley's blood curdling scream, and it kept running through his head the last five minutes, like it was haunting him, like he thought it would forever. Mitch knew that if it was bad for him, while him and Riley were best friends, he knew it was even worse to hear that for Auston. He never thought that his girlfriend would ever be murdered, he wanted them to grow old together, sit in their rocking chairs at 80-something years old, talking about the weather or reading a good book, remembering the good old days when they were young and naive. He felt like his whole world came crashing down, like he was ruined and nothing could be better.
