Pain. It became even more unbearable by the second. I missed Norah. I felt the connection to the other world weaken. Am I still a siren?
I needed to get to water. Water! I ran out of the toilet as fast as I could and out of the school gates. I ran into the forest and through it to the cliff below which was a raging sea. I dived in head first. My legs morphed into a tail on contact with the salty water which was so dear to me. It numbed the dull ache slightly but I could still feel the emptiness in my soul.
I swam with greater difficulty than usual against the current and towards a small cave, hidden from the eyes of passers-by. Inside the cave I could sit on the rocks while leaving my tail in the water, giving me an excellent balance between the 2 worlds.
In this cave I kept things I may need, such as make up, human food and clothes. Also a couple books and a spare phone. I looked at myself in the make-up mirror. Already my hair lost its light -blue shade and was a silver grey which matched better with my pale skin. I was losing all my color- my tail also assumed a swirl of different tints and shades of grey.
Black patterns started developing around my eyes and down the sides of my neck. They spread on my back in a design similar to a the wings of an angel, but black. They continued snaking down the sides of my chest and stomach. They also started coming from palm, forming some kind of gloves on my hands. Next, it continued to my arms, as if the black pattern was a thorn bush weaving its way around me. At my shoulders it connected with the one on my neck. My tail was left untouched but when I took my human form, I saw that my legs now had the same thorn bush pattern which ended at my ankle leaving my feet bare.
My whole body became scarier and more animal like. My nails lengthened and I could feel them harden. I felt my body become lighter and weaker. My cheeks sunk in and my lips became dark grey. When I smiled, I flashed a set of perfectly white and deadly fangs.
I tried to see if I still have my powers. I tried to create a ball of water in my palm, but instead I created a fuming black ball of steam. I threw it at seagull that perched itself at the opening of my cave. To my surprise instead of dispersing the moment it touched the bird, the ball exploded and created a lot of black smoke. When it finally cleared, all that was left was some ash and a few charred feathers. It was pretty clear what has happened to the unfortunate creature that appeared at the wrong place at the wrong time.
This new power amazed me. Yet at the back of my mind I was intimidated my how destructive I can now be.
The next power that I wanted to check the presence of was attracting humans. I severely doubted this happening, due to my new appearance. I decided to give it a shot.
I swam up to the surface and transformed back into my human form. I walked out of the water in a deserted area concealed by a wild forest.
I was fully clothed when I walked into the city. My hair- dry as usual. I looked at a man that was passing by and I began chanting the beautiful melody, sirens are so famous for.
Today, it felt different than usual- there was some sort of toxic violence and lust in that I have never felt before. The man turned to me and I could see that his eyes were grey- even where it's normally white. He began walking towards me and that's when I noticed a whole lot of new sensations running into my brain. Smells. One smell actually. The smell of warm blood which was pumping in every single person around me. The man was walking towards me and I realized why I lured him- it was my new and desperate need for fresh human blood.
There is a lot of things I have done in my life that may be considered monster-like, but I have never attacked someone helpless who has done nothing to me. Not even for the purpose of food. I simply couldn't justify that act to myself.
I turned and ran immediately breaking the enchantment I cast on my almost-victim. Through the forest and into the sea, back to my safe cave.
I sat underwater, shaking with the terror of the crime I was about to commit. As the effect worn of, I discovered a new aspect of my new self- I need blood to survive and now my entire existence focuses on getting and drinking blood. Fresh human blood.
With great pain, I can clearly remember the intoxicating smell. I couldn't get it out of my system and the more I tried the firmer it engraved itself into my brain. Slowly, the dull need transformed into a first dull and then a murderous pain. It felt like my throat is being ripped out, like a thousand daggers were stabbing my chest, like my insides were burning, yet freezing at the same time.
I pushed myself through the surface of the water and drew a sharp breath of air, even though oxygen wouldn't make up for my new aggravating need for blood.
I looked at my hands which were becoming paler and the black patterns darker. With great horror I realized that the black thorns began burning into my skin, slowly heating up to unbearable temperatures. I need to get to blood, now.
I jumped out of the water onto the cave floor. In the process, I scratched myself on a bulging rock, causing a dark almost black substance to ooze out. It smelled like blood. Before I could think about my previous knowledge of the dangers of supernatural blood, I bit into my own arm. It caused a sharp pain as my lips sizzled as if I just kissed a flame. My vision became blurry, and I could only look up at myself in the mirror to see that my eyes became absolutely white, before I lost my sight entirely.
This was the final stroke. I broke down sobbing on the cave floor. It hit me that I am alone in this world, blind and desperately needing fresh human blood.
