Weird Guy, Nice Guy

All my classes for the day went pretty smoothly. Victor helped me catch up on projects, and so did Yurio, but not as nicely. Luckily I was offered to sit with the two at lunch, so I wasn't left out.

Those were the thoughts that ran through my head when I walked along the school wall, preparing to trek home. Suddenly, a familiar voice came booming from a bit behind me.

"Yuuuuurrriiii! Wait up!"

I turned around and Victor was dashing a ways behind me. I stopped and waited for him to catch up. I wonder what he needed? Out of breath, he caught up to me and panted a bit before catching his breath. I drew a breath and asked,

"What's up? Did you need something?" He smiled and straightened himself up so he was at least a head taller than me again.

"Do you walk home, Yuri?" I was a bit confused at his question, but I nodded nonetheless. "So you have some time to kill before leaving?" I furrowed my brows and checked my watch.

"Um, my mother is fine as long I'm home by six-thirty, so I guess so, yeah. W-why do you ask?"

He grinned wide. "Well, would you stay here and chat with me for a bit? I have a question to ask you." I nodded and gulped nervously. What in the world would he want to ask me?

"S-sure, I'm fine with that. What do you n-need to ask me?" He flipped the hair out of his face and put on a serious expression. Uh oh... What did I do?

"Yuri, this morning, you started to cry when I said my name, and you haven't said my name once all day. I would like to know why." Oh no. I panicked at that.

"I-I'm sorry, I c-can't.... I need to go!" I turned to run away, but a strong hand grabbed my arm and pulled me back.

"Yuri! I want to be your friend, but if you can't even say my name and I don't know why..." I tried to pull from his grip, but he was too strong. I tried to tell him but I just couldn't.

"N-no... Its not that, i j-just-" in the middle of my sentence, Victor spun me around and, with his strength much greater than mine, he pinned me up against the school's brick wall, with my arms above my head. His face was so close to mine, I could feel his warm breath on my forehead. I looked up into his icy eyes. Surprisingly, he looked concerned for me.

"Say my name, Yuri. Say my name." It wasn't like I could refuse him.

"V-victor..." And unsurprisingly, I broke down, just from that one little name. He loosened his grip on my hands and I slid down the wall in defeat, drawing my knees into my chest, and I sobbed. Victor kneeled beside me. In a voice that was full of concern, he asked again:

"Please, Yuri. What does my name mean to you?" I gave up and told him everything. I told him about my poodle, and how when he died, it felt like I had lost everything. My only friend, the only one who didn't bully me, call me "Piggy." The words flowed out of my mouth like a burst dam. I hadn't known this guy for a full day yet, but I trusted him with everything bothering me.

He listened to my every word. He didn't interrupt once, just listened intently and nodded along. When I was done, we were both sitting there, on the back wall of the school. I would have said we looked homeless, but no homeless person could be as beautiful as Victor. Then, Victor broke the silence.

"Yuri, that is awful. I'm so sorry that happened to you. I really understand why you didn't want to say my name. But think of it this way. Victor was your best friend, right?" I nodded. "Well, I don't know if I can compare to him, but I'd like to be your best friend, Yuri." My eyes widened and tears began to flow again. Through my tears, I said in the steadiest voice I could muster,

"I'd like that. I'd really like that."

At my words, Victor smiled a sweet, gentle smile. He had so many different smiles, and every one of them were beautiful. Then, he hooked an arm across my shoulders and pulled me against his chest, into a wonderful hug. Instead of being creeped out like I usually would have been, I relaxed into this guy who had only met six hours ago, and already would trust with my life.

After sitting in silence like that for a bit, I checked my watch. I really should go home soon.. I don't want to leave though..

I guess it's inevitable. I moved out of Victor's arms back into my sitting position. I picked up my school bag that was laying on the ground beside me. I stood up and dusted myself off, and he did the same.

" I, um, I should probably go home now... S-sorry.." He grinned and replied.

"Yeah, I guess so. Which direction is your house?" I pointed down a street across from us. He smiled and laughed.

"Mine too! It's a small world! Mind if I walk with you?" I smiled and agreed. We walked down the street and had a nice conversation about ourselves. Well, mostly Victor, but I didn't mind. I learned that he was originally from Russia, and so was Yurio. They'd known each other since before they moved, so they were really good friends. (Even if Yurio didn't admit it.) We reached my house, and I sighed. I kinda wish it had taken longer.

"W-well, this my house, so, um.." I just let my sentence trail off. When I looked up, a huge grin had broken across his face.

"No way. This is really your house?"

"Um, yeah..." At that, Victor collapsed into a fit of giggles. He literally just fell down on the sidewalk and laughed like a maniac. I was pretty concerned, thought he was having a seizure or something. When he recovered, he pointed directly across the street. Through giggles, he said,

"That's my house." My mouth dropped open. I thought he was kidding.

"No way." He just nodded with a goofy grin on his face. I shook my head incredulously.

"I guess it's a smaller world than we thought..." When we recovered from the shock, we waved goodbye. He was about to cross the street, when on impulse I turned around and called out to him

"Thank you... For everything... Victor." At my words, he smiled the biggest I had seen yet, and replied happily,

"My pleasure, Yuri." Then, he crossed the street and went home. I turned around and did the same.

Victor Nikiforov. What a weird, nice guy.
