Ouch!
"Honey, is everything okay up there?"
"Y-yes mom... Um, everything's fine, don't worry!"Shit! I really have to change the location of this cursed piece of furniture. Otherwise, next time I will really risk to pull my toe off.
It's been almost two years now that we have been living in this neighborhood. To be honest, this move was made of my own free will because I could no longer stand the interminable journeys between the house and my old high school. Until that day, I could not bare the fools of my class, but however, I met one of the best friends of this entire earth.
Besides, I wonder what she is doing right now. It's 11:00 am and still no call from her."Hope, can you get down please?", said mother impatiently. Without delay, I rushed down the stairs. I wondered what she wanted to tell me this time; short tempered as she was, I hoped that she would not yell at me again for not having watered the tulips. Direction the kitchen. There, I saw my mother seated, preoccupied. She stared at the ground with disappointment.
" Here you are... I have to announce you that your father will not come back until mid September. So, we'll have to get by on our own this time again. "Again?!", I shouted. This news did not rejoice me at all. I could already see enormous chores coming in the next few hours. What a mess... Since our arrival here, dad has been summoned at least six times abroad. We were mostly three at home.
"And when will he return back precisely?"
"I cannot tell you...", she said softly.
" Oh okay. Thank you mum..."
My mother and I were always accomplices, followed by my dear sister, Eva. Unluckily, it changed when my mother partly lost her sight, and at the same time, her job. It was an austere experience for me and my family who were so keen on her. But gradually we ended up getting used to the situation. Likewise for her. Since that incident, we have always relied on my father. Even if sometimes we had to manage on our own. Industrial projects, meetings, appointments, foreign calls, all took up most of his time.
"Well, that is your first task."
Already? I did make my best, but could not resist making a face. She gazed at me. "Sorry...", I said apologetically.
"You'll need to go to the supermarket to buy us this list of products and confectionery. You'll need to hurry if you don't want me to prepare spinach puree tonight", she said, giggling.
"Um, I'll be back in few minutes then."
She shook her head and smiled at me. I headed towards the entrance door, the list in hand. I took the car keys, put on a pair of rubber boots and went outside. It was pouring rain. I hesitated before venturing into these gusts; and finally did it. But... I like the rain. I always have.
Rain often reminds me of memories. The best part of my memory is outside me, in a rainy breath, in the smell of a room, or in the smell of a first outbreak. Autumn was rainy and sad. The red leaves instead of cracking under the feet, rotted in the ruts, under the heavy showers. Small as I was, I liked it all the more so on sunny days.
