"What is this 'man of snow'." the confused Castiel looked at me, kneeling to the ground and feeling the snow. "Is it some sort of creature we must fight?"
I chuckled, "No, silly. You use the snow to make a man. It's fun. Come on, I'll show you."
I knelt down to the ground as well and grabbed a bunch of snow, starting to form a ball.
Cas watched as I did this and started following along and doing the same thing. When I finished mine, I stood up to see how he was doing. He had a perfect ball in his hands, "Is this good?" he asked.
"Yeah, that's really good! Now we roll it into a bigger ball and it will become the base of the snowman!" This was more fun than I could have imagined. I never thought I'd be teaching Cas how to build a snowman. But here I am.
"How do we do that?" Cas looked at the ball in his hands, then back at me, tilting his head in confusion. I always loved when he did that.
"Easy, watch this." I knelt back down and started rolling the ball, making it bigger and bigger. I noticed Cas still standing there, "Come on! You can do it."
After a second, he finally knelt and started copying what I was doing.
Mine was finally big enough for the base, and I stopped Cas so he wouldn't make his any bigger. "Okay, Cas, now you put yours on top of mine."
"But why?"
"How do you think we make it a man?" I smiled. Yep, this was definitely fun. The look of pure confusion on Castiel's face was priceless.
He lifted his half up from the ground and placed it on top of mine. He stepped back to look at it, "Okay, is it done?"
"Nope, not yet. We need some small stones or something for the face. And of course, the carrot nose."
"A carrot for a nose? That will look silly," he said as he wiped the snow from his hands onto his trenchcoat.
"Yeah. And now that you mention it, it is pretty ridiculous. Who even came up with that?"
Cas opened his mouth to speak but I held up a hand and he stopped. I chuckled, "I'll go inside and get a carrot from the kitchen. Can you look for some stones? We need, maybe about a dozen."
"Yes," he nodded, "I can do that."
"Okay." I was glad to go inside for a few minutes to get that carrot. It was freezing outside. I hope I don't get sick from doing this. But I think teaching Cas about snowmen is worth it.
I went to the kitchen and found Sam making some coffee. "Hey Sam," I greeted.
"Hey, whatcha doing?"
"Making a snowman outside with Cas." I didn't stop as I walked to the refrigerator. "We need a carrot."
"Bottom drawer," Sam said when he noticed me struggling to find the carrots.
"Thanks." I opened the bottom drawer and pulled one out.
I started to leave when Sam put a hand on my shoulder, "You should put on more than a sweater, hon, don't want you to get sick."
I guess he was right. When Cas brought up snowmen and how he had no idea what they were, I got so excited to build one with him, that I had just barely finished shrugging on my sweater when we went out the door. No wonder I was freezing. "Oh yeah. Thanks."
With the carrot in hand, I ran to my room so I could get my coat, scarf, hat and gloves. I put them on as fast as I possibly could. I didn't want to keep Cas waiting too long. After I finished getting everything on, I ran back to the door, waving to Dean on the way out.
"Okay, Cas! I got the carrot!" I said cheerfully.
I saw Cas standing next to the half-built snowman, attempting to put the stones on. I tried not to laugh as I said, "Here, let me help." I took some of the stones he had placed in random spots on the head. "All men have faces, right?"
"Of course."
"Well, so does Mr. Snowman here." I smiled again. I put two stones for the eyes and gave the rest to Cas. "Wanna try to make his smile?"
"I think I can manage that," he said and started to put the stones in place.
He finished making the smile and stood back to admire his work. The smile might be crooked, but right now I'd say it looked as beautiful as the Mona Lisa. She was smiling, right?
"Will you do the honors?" I held out the carrot in my gloved hand.
His face was priceless as he took the carrot and looked down at it in confusion. That's when I lost it. All the laughter I had been holding back throughout the day burst out into a fit of giggles.
"Are you okay? Should I get Sam or Dean?" he questioned, concerned. At this point I was wheezing.
"No, no," I said, trying hard to calm myself down. "I'm fine. Everything's fine, Cas."
"How's it goin' out here?" Dean said suddenly, making Cas and I turn around to look at him. "Ooh, that's nice," he complimented when he saw our snowman.
"It's not finished," Cas stated, "We still need to... use this carrot for the nose?" He looked at me and I nodded my head.
"Okay, well don't let me get in the way."
"No, it's alright if you stay." I smiled at him. "Cas, put the nose right in the middle."
Cas put the carrot in and stepped back once again. "This looks nothing like a man."
I ignored him and took off my scarf, "Hold on! It needs this last thing." I put my scarf around the neck of the snowman. "There! I think it's done! What do you think, Dean?" I turned around but Dean wasn't there, "Dean?"
Just then, Dean came back outside with Sam and Kevin.
"What?" Kevin asked, "It's just a snowman."
Sam elbowed him in the side.
"It's Cas' first snowman," I corrected.
"Oh." Kevin smirked. "It's nice."
"Thank you, Kevin," Cas said.
"Alright, it's cold out here," Dean said, "Let's go inside before we all freeze to death."
