Quiet suppressed sniffles and muffled mumbling resonated throughout the dark, empty music room. An old, abandoned but still playable grand piano sat in the dusty corner with a black cloth hung over it. Over to the wall next to the entrance, an aluminium closet that once shone stood. The atmosphere was slightly humid due to the weather outside.

Tick tock. The sound of the clock that hasn't been taken down up until today makes the room feel eerie.

Pitter patter. The sound of the rain that once came in slight drizzles had now become cascading thunderstorms firing against the windows, rattling them.

But the surroundings sounds could never hinder the soft sobs that were escaping the mouth of the girl who was crouched in the corner opposite the old piano. The vibrating phone that was clutched loosely in her grasp had now slipped out onto the cold, blue carpeted floor.

For the girl, this routine was completely normal. After the tragic incident that almost made her go delirious out of depression, she needed to find a place where she could be alone. Somewhere she could release her emotions and tears without being judged or stared at. Somewhere she could escape from reality and soothe her pain.

And she did.

Located at the very back of the school, was the original school block which was now abandoned and rumored to be haunted. Those who challenged themselves to explore its twisting hallways never even made it past the entrance, as they were terrified by the sound of the weeping of a girl and muffled voices in one of the rooms.

But they never knew it was her.

She leaned her back against the wall and took a glance outside the windows. The rain had decided to stop, and the dark clouds were already starting to disperse. Images of the incident flashed inside her head, never leaving the mind of the girl. Tears that had dried found their way to her eyes again but this time she quickly wiped them away with her small hands.

'Shit, don't cry, you've cried enough.'  she thought.

The death of Min Soohyun, who was not only her best friend, but also who she had journeyed through childhood with, had taken a deep toll on her. On October 27th, the day when she had first received the news of the suicide, she had fainted due to shock. And it was only the day before when she had last heard her voice, when talking to her on the phone.

-

That day, Soohyun had something important to say. I had politely waved it off, stating that I had an assignment due the next morning and did not want to be disturbed. She had replied with an upset'Oh.'

And that was the last thing I heard before I hung up.

Maybe if I had listened to what she had to say back then, she would most likely be alive  and breathing right now. And it would be like how it used to be before, when we would have sleepovers and talk about the craziest things. Having a movie marathon that lasted until 3 a.m., in which we would eventually fall into deep slumber part way.

But being the stupid me, I didn't. And things couldn't go back to how it was then. The day must go on, and I, myself, too have to move on.

However I can't and I would probably never move on. The day when it had happened would forever be engraved into my mind and soul, latching onto me, and trapping me in pure dark oblivion. The guilt gnawed and pulled a heavy weight at my heart, never letting go, like bowling balls chained to the ankles of my feet, making it hard to push forward.

I promised myself I would take the blame. After all, the cause of her death was inevitably me.

So don't worry Soohyun, I always keep my promises.

-

The girl sat upright and placed her hands around her knees which were tucked against her chest. She decided to stay there for a moment longer to fully enjoy the peace and quiet. While she continued to stare at the scenery outside, a concerned looking pair of soft brown eyes were peeking at her through the crack of the wooden door, going unnoticed.
