The pain you were in was unbearable.
Of course, the countless books and the infinite conversations with doctors did indeed tell you the giving birth was going to be painful, but this was excruciating. Your husband, V, was gripping one of your hands while the other was busy holding onto the silver railing that lined the hospital bed.
V's foggy eyes looked distant, as they always did. Whenever he would take his sunglasses off, his eyes would look everywhere but at you, but it was all an illusion. He really couldn't see anything and his unusual eye movements were just due to him not knowing where to rest his eyes.
You've caught him many times before knocking things over, walking right into walls or doors and once, he even sliced his hand with a knife attempting to make dinner. The only way to give him his sight back was for someone to donate eyes. Since eyes aren't really something you can just give away like a kidney or perhaps an appendix, there were no donors. You've begged him time and time again to allow you to donate your own eyes, but he never allowed it.
"Just hold on for a little bit longer, love." His voice was nervous and almost broken. He squeezed your hand as you tried to stifle down an erupting scream.
"She's crowning!" One of the nurses called, motioning the doctor to be alert.
"Just one more push," the brunette doctor assured, grinning up at you for a second. You nodded before giving this last push your all, yelping as they pulled the rest of the baby's body out. Your back fell onto the ruffled sheets, as your heavy breathing quickened. V kissed your hand tenderly, before wiping away a stray tear.
"They're cleaning her off," you told him, smiling through your words. She wailed and yelled as many hands were washing all the blood off of her.
"C-Can you see what she looks like?" He asked you, keeping his dead eyes on your hospital gown. You tried to see through the crowd of nurses but you couldn't see her just yet.
"Not yet,"
"I'm sure she's beautiful, just like you." You grinned, wishing that he could see you now. All your bitterness about his eyesight washed away when one of the nurses handed you your beautiful baby girl. You cried and smiled uncontrollably while she shifted in your arms.
"What does she look like?" He asked, urgently.
"Just like you...." Your words flew off your tongue while shock filled your body. Her skin was pale, which made the red on her cheeks that might brighter. Her eye lashes were long and looked jet black, while her eyes were a brilliant turquoise. It reminded you of the eyes that you missed seeing.
"She's so beautiful...." you breathed, captured in the happiest moment of your life so far. Seeing something that you and V created together in your arms made you more excited than ever before. All the possibilities of her life flashed through your mind, making a giggle come from your mouth.
"I love you so much," he told you for probably the millionth time since you've known him.
"I love you more."
Time Skip
Your eyes fluttered open gently. You groaned a little, just getting up from your first peaceful sleep in a while. You placed your arm to your side, expecting to feel your loving husband, but he wasn't there. You frowned, flipping the dancing sheets off your legs and placing your feet on the cold, wooden floor.
"V!" You called out, but nothing in return. You began to grow a little scared as you checked every room in the house. You were afraid he may have hurt himself while trying to get somewhere. You quickly found him though, leaning over your two month old child. His back rose and fell quickly, and you watched droplets of water stain the sheets of the crib. Your eyebrows flew up as you walked over to him, placing your hand on his back while kneeling down next to him.
"What's wrong, my love?" You asked, quickly making him wipe his face and turn to face you, his eyes, starting at the wall behind you.
"Good morning, dearest. How did you sleep?"
"That's not the most important thing right now, V. Why were you upset?"
"Oh, that was nothing. Please don't worry." His voice was smooth and as it usually was, but you could tell something was off.
"Please tell me what's bothering you. For better or for worse, remember? I want you to feel like you can tell me anything."
"I'm fine, love. Don't worry about me."
You cupped his face in your hands, bringing his lips to yours. They were as soft as ever, and as soothing as much as the first time you two shared a kiss.
"I can feel your pain, V. I want to help." You told him, tucking his hand into the crook of your neck, wrapping your arms around him.
"I just..... I just want to see her...." He whispered, tears started to fall again.
"I want to see you. I want to help you with everything I can. I couldn't even help you down the stairs when you were pregnant. I can't provide for you like a husband should. And I just keep thinking that I'm going to miss our child's life. I'll never see her first step, I'll never see her utter her first word, I'll never even see her first day of school. I want to be able to do everything a normal husband and father should be able to do.... but I just.... can't."
You clutched him tighter and burried your head into his back, taking in his amazing scent. You longed for his eyesight just as much as he did, and you hoped he would allow you to donate your eyes.
"Please, let me donate my eyes. I don't care that-"
"No. There is no way I'll make you suffer like that."
"But-"
"I said no!" He cried, letting go of you and sobbing into his hands. You were about to reach for him when the baby started crying, letting you know she needed to be carried. You calmed her down while rocking her in your arms. You sat back down slowly.
"Hold her."
"But what if I drop her? What if I can't see where-" you grabbed his arms and positioned them properly, slipping her into his arms carefully.
"Now, make sure to balance her head. She's really stubborn, if you don't hold her feet up she'll start crying."
You watched him smile at her, and for the first time, his eyes were looking at where they were supposed to.
Right at hers.
V needs more love
