betty

it was the day after jason's year-late funeral and veronica and i had finally set aside our differences. i was sugar, and she was spice. we were betty and veronica, a dynamic duo and it was always going to be that way.

veronica had been acting strange since yesterday though. she went to that sleepover with cheryl and told me it was... weird, cheryl's parents were interrogating her and she had confided in veronica as a friend. so today, the still-alive blossom was sitting with us since she had no other friends.

"hello." cheryl smiled, her lips closed tightly together. she didn't even pick up her fork to eat her mangoes on the tray, but i wouldn't feel like eating much if i went to my siblings funeral either. "as you all know, i have quit the river vixens. and all other clubs i was participating in, so since my other friends have um," cheryl cleared her throat, "left me, i'll be sitting with you all. the sad breakfast club." she muttered the last words under her breath but i still heard, which caused me to roll my eyes.

i scooted closer to veronica. questions started to rise about if we were friends or something more, and i was beginning to be more open to the idea of... i dunno, coming out. i already knew my dad would be okay with me and veronica but my mom had always been so strict on finding me a husband. "cool." archie said, hardly focusing on the conversation. he was on his phone, i assumed he was texting valerie.
jughead showed up at our table and took a seat next to me.

"veronica, could i interview you for the school newspaper? scratch that, i'm going to interview you. our column on student interviews has been pretty dry and i think you'd be a good fit for the role." jughead fixed his iconic cap on his head. veronica opened her mouth to object but realized it didn't have any point. kevin scoffed,
"so when you interviewed me that was bland?" he raised his eyebrows.
"uh, yeah." jughead said as a-matter-of-factly. kevin grunted.

"you know what, why don't i interview you both? betty and veronica. next week the interview column is strictly set for josie and the pussycats so this would be a good idea." he smirked at the two of us and i laughed. "okay, sure." and as soon as lunch was over the two of us were in the library.

"to start off, i'd like to ask you a couple of questions about the river vixens. how has it been without cheryl?" his phone recorded the conversation for when he actually wrote it. i worked in the newspaper too and it was exciting being on the other end of the interview.

"it's been weird." i didn't have much to say. "like we're missing a person, she was a part of us." veronica added on to my sentence. cheryl and her had been getting closer lately, it was an unexpected friendship to say the least. jughead nodded.

"okay. any idea on who's going to be the new captain?" he asked. we both shook our heads no, "no idea." veronica spoke. after a few more questions on the current status of the cheerleading squad, he started getting more in depth.
"there have been some rumours that the two of you are in a relationship. is this true or is just a silly fad?" jughead eyed the two of us. i know he knew something about us i just didn't know what.

"um, uh," i stammered to say something. i didn't know how to respond to the question. "none of your business. so maybe instead of butting into other people's relationships we can focus on other things, what about that?" veronica was losing her temper. i told her to calm down.
"hah, okay well thanks for letting me interview you two." jughead said quickly, taking his phone and pen. "thanks." i mumbled. once he was out of sight i turned to veronica.

"you could've just said we weren't together instead of whatever that was! people are going to twist the words and think we're in a relationship!" i anxiously told her. i ran a hand through my hair and then put them both on my hips.

"so what? is that so bad for the school to know we're together? i'm tired of hiding us together, i want everybody to know we're a couple." veronica adjusted her purse from her should. she stepped closer,
"because it gets annoying when boys try to hit on me and i have to give them that 'i'm not interested' talk." veronica told me, a smile on her lips. i held back a laugh but it came out anyway. she leaned in and kissed me slowly.
