I trotted down the stairs hitching my school bag up higher on my shoulder. I took a sharp right turn off the bottom step and stumbled into a stack of boxes. It took me a few seconds to recover before remembering that this was a new house and we weren't finished unpacking yet.
I rubbed my sore nose before walking around the tall stack and continuing towards the kitchen.
I flicked on the light when I stepped through the dooorway. I walked over towards the island, setting my bag down on the granite counter.
A white piece of paper that was stuck to the fridge caught my eye. I walked over to it and realized it was a note...from mom.
Lila,
I'm working late tonight
I probably won't be back till early morning
Don't wait up
There is money in the cookie jar for dinner
See you tomorrow
Mom
I sighed. Of course. When was mom ever home anyway? I set the note back down on the counter and opened up the fridge. I pulled a cup of yogurt out and ate that for breakfast. I stuck a granola bar and water bottle in my back pack for lunch.
I set my bag back onto my shoulder and left the house, grabbing my keys before leaving. I climbed into my car then began the short drive to school. My new school. Jackson High.
---
I pulled into the parking lot of the school and drove around till I found my labeled parking spot. Spot number 249.
I took my keys out of the ignition and looked around. Groups of students stood and talked with each other. Busses were pulling up and letting kids off. It seemed like a normal high school. I stayed in the car for a few more moments before building up the courage to go inside.
I shut the door and locked it behind me as I walked up to the entrance. Conveniently the front office was right there in the front by the doors. I walked inside and up to the desk.
"Hi, can I help you?" A lady asked who was shuffling papers around and walking to and from a room off to the side.
"Um. I'm new here and I was wondering if I could get my schedule." I asked. She slowed her pace and turned to me leaning in the doorway of the small room.
"Yeah sure. I'll have that for you in a few moments." I nodded at her retreating figure as she turned and walked back into the small room.
I took the time that she was gone to look around. The office was very open. The walls were just giant windows. Large groups of students walked in the direction of a long hallway.
This school seemed really big now that I was inside. I was a little uncomfortable and nervous about finding all of my classes.
"Here you go." I quickly turned to face the lady. She was holding out a piece of paper to me. I took it and looked it over. It was my schedule.
I thanked her then left the office. As I stepped out the door a dull bell sounded. Great. I'm late.
I let a sigh escape my lips as I realized I would have to awkwardly walk into a classroom full of students.
I turned and walked away from the office while looking down at my schedule. First period was Calculus in room 128. I looked up and glanced at the nearest door. It was room 142. Okay then, I took a right and glanced at all of the doors till I eventually found room 128.
