Walter was 63 years old, and had been working the same old job since he was 20. No one ever thanked him. In fact, most folks didn't even know a job like his existed, and those that did spent their time ignoring it, forgetting it. They didn't want to admit it was Walter who kept everything afloat, in fact, without him, everything would have crumbled a long time ago.

Walter knew his retirement was coming, his muscles were always sore, his joints creaked, his eyes felt heavy, and he was always so worn out, and tired at the end of the day. One could say Walter's body knew of better days, when it was still young and energetic, the days when he didn't have arthritis in his knuckles. Now sometimes it was so bad, he could hardly grip his tackle box. Sometimes his knees would be so stiff that going up the stairs seemed impossible, and it seemed Walter had developed a chronic cough.

Despite all of this, Walter trekked on, for he had a strength about him that just couldn't be matched.

But he was nearing retirement. He needed a replacement. Needed to teach someone the ropes, someone to carry out his job. Walter decided it was time for him to get an apprentice.
