Prologue
The rain was painfully loud on the roof of the car, when you looked out the window, you could only see a sheet of grey, Dad could no longer drive without getting us into danger. No one spoke throughout the drive, there was nothing to talk about, which was strange, usually dad would play a game or have lame dad jokes to break the silence.
But not today.
So the fifth hour passed slowly.
Sighing aloud I stared out the window wishing for sleep to over take, with my finger I start drawing on the fogged up window, what creature it was I never thought I would know. My iPod went flat after three hours of driving, there we were, trapped in the middle of nowhere, no signal to call anyone, not that we would have anyone to call.
We have just moved from our house in Ireland, to Scotland, our furniture and other belongings are already at the house, we were supposed to be there eight hours ago. But Mother's bladder and the weather, opposed to that plan.
Seventh hour, we still couldn't move. The rain had turned to hail, mum has fallen asleep in the passenger seat, and dad is reading the newspaper in the driver seat. I'm in the back, on my own, wondering around the castle of my thoughts. The weather had just gotten worse, I would have never believed it could, but it did, thunder roared through the skies following the jagged forks of lightning slicing the sky, lighting everything up.
I look at dad again, I stare at him. I notice he is tense, dad is never tense, always relaxed in his own lazy kind of way. He keeps looking up and around every ten minutes and checking his watch. Even these small signs, aren't making me any more comfortable. I can't sleep as it is, I don't even want to close my eyes now, I'm too afraid to ask what's wrong, maybe theres a creature outside, or theres another car. I just shrug to myself and keep looking out the window. Still vaguely aware of Dads movements, and always aware of the blinding lightening outside.
Eighth hour, my dad suddenly sits up straight, I see his expression of horror, like he is seeing a ghost, the movement wakes Mother suddenly. They're both looking straight ahead out into the rain, after a short gasp from Mother I see what they see.
I see a dark figure walking through the rain towards us, dark, dark feel, this person reeks with darkness, even the lightening doesn't make the darkness flee, its like this figure is a shadow, of something bigger. Like the shadow of death itself, the air in the heated car was being drained, I felt an ice-cold shiver go up my spine, wondering if this was all just my imagination. I pinched myself, he it coming.
It just kept coming. Slowly, approaching.
