Chapter 3
‘The inner hive’
Must be the house, because the house is in the middle of all the hives, at first I thought Mr Williams was insane when he said that bees were good guard dogs, but he was right though, they keep the hives behind the house so people can reach the front door without a high chance of getting stung. All the flowers that run up along the driveway do cause a bit of attraction to the bees though. I ran even faster as I saw the line of trees marking where their house is and as I ran up the long driveway breathing heavily. Powered by the thought that something is finally happening in my life and that my mother might still be alive, when I reached the door of the small fairy tale looking house an identical piece of paper was pinned to the door, I hastily grab it:
Two secrets now lead to her fate
Here is your enemy and your place
Voiceless it cries
Wingless flutters
Toothless bites
Mouth less mutters
And,
This thing all things devour;
Birds, beasts, trees, flowers;
Gnaws iron, bites steel;
Grinds hard stones to meal;
Slays king, ruins town,
And beats high mountains down
Oh! I had read the Hobbit a million times over, wind, and time. Those were the answers. My enemy is time and my place is wind. A place where its windy, hot air balloon... no, nothing to do with mum cliff... no… A BRIDGE! Yes, the bridge where my mother supposedly slipped. As I'm excitedly jumping around like a maniac, the small door opens and the short and plump Mrs, Williams is standing in the doorway her face contorted with confusion, She has a lovely sweet face, and Mr Williams, you could tell he would have been a hit with the ladies in his heyday.
"Dear girl, what are you up to?" she asks, still confused.
"Mrs Williams now is no time for questions, I need to find my mother!" I say hurriedly, moving off the porch as I speak. She looks at me then down at my hands, holding on tightly to the piece of paper. An expression passes in her eyes that I've never seen before, but as soon as it was there it was gone again. Then she just nodded.
"then you better be off little one" She sighed. "But make sure Eliza knows where you are, and be back by diner time"
"Yes, Mrs Williams" I smile and try to hold in a giggle, old people are alwasys fussing over something, she is like my own grandma.
I start to head back to the house in a slow jog and as I reach the front door, Aunt Eliza, as timely as ever, pulls up in the driveway. I launch myself of the porch, nearly falling over again. And start to tell her everything as I help bring the shopping into the kitchen. When I was finished she was leaning heavily on the kitchen bench.
"She loved treasure hunts as we were growing up" she says so softly I barely catch her words. " she always was thinking up the best treasure hunts...' she paused and looked up at my face. "It's definitely her. Pack your bags, we're going to London.
