Chapter 6
"So, tell me: what's your family like?" I asked as I put my feet on the dash board. He kept his eyes on the road as he spoke.
"We're, uhm, a normal family. Grandfather who does everything to stay, quote en quote, 'hip,' Stepdad who's wise beyond his years, Perfectionist mom who has a soft spot for her favorite son. That's me by the way, don't tell Noah," he joked. "There's my sister, Alessi. She's 25 and she thinks her fiance's the one. Lastly, there's my annoying little brother Noah, but you already knew that."
I laughed at how he described his family. It may seem like he couldn't give a care in the world for them, but the truth was far from it. They seemed like a close knit family to me, and that always made me feel a bit jealous.
"I was thinking," he started. "We have to get our story straight. We can't be saying the opposite things."
"You're right. Alright then, let's start from the beginning. How did we meet?"
"Easy," he said. "You tutored me and I like smart girls."
"That's it?" I wanted to challenge him.
"Then I asked you out," he said with a sigh, as if he was tired already.
"First date?"
" I took you out for burgers after you denied me the pleasure of sharing dinner with you," he replied with a laugh. I laughed with him, remembering that time he got me to eat dinner with him after I rejected his prior invitation.
"More like you tricked me into having dinner with you. Never ever take advantage of a hungry girl, Radke," I replied.
It made me feel better that we were using some events that actually happened. The idea of pretending to be his girlfriend made me feel anxious and kept me up at night. I wasn't born to keep a lie going, but I had to try.
"And what, it's love at first sight?" I tried to keep the disgust from showing but failed.
"Not that type of girl, huh?" he asked, turning his head ever so slightly toward me. His lips curled into a smile and I couldn't help but stare. "Well, how 'bout-"
"How about we tell them what actually happened?" I interrupted. "You were unbearably rude to me but after a while, you started being nice. A little too nice, in fact. You started smiling more and we became friends."
"And I asked you out, burgers were served and it was a love story waiting to happen," he said.
"Okay, you watch a lot of chick flicks," I said, laughing at him for his cheesy lines.
"Nah, I just know the way to a girl's heart," he said smugly.
"Whatever." I groaned. "How long have we been going out?"
"We've known each other a good two months, so maybe we can stretch it to about four months," he replied.
"Are we getting serious?" I asked. It felt awkward saying it out loud and I could feel the tension in the air.
"You could say that," he said, trying to sound as nonchalant as possible.
"Can I ask you something?" I asked quietly.
"Go ahead, babe," he said. I drew him a funny look and he saw. "Look, don't give me that look. I'm your pretend boyfriend and I reserve the right to call you babe, baby, honey pie, sugar plum." We both laughed and when the laughter died down, I took a deep breath.
