Midnight's Past

Chapter Six

Midnight sat at the center of the camp. The sun was beginning to rise and cats were crawling out of their dens. She saw Lionstar approach her. "Your vigil is over. You can go sleep."

"Okay, thank you."

Midnight led the border patrol through the forest. They were checking for the foxes when they ran into a Water Clan patrol. "We're on our side of the border!"

"Yes, but you're too close. Suspiciously close." Bluebadger, a Water Clan warrior snarled. He took a step closer to the border.

"If you cross the border we have permission to rip your pelt off."

"Ha! The little rogue thinks she knows how being a warrior works!" Icefur chuckled with an evil glint in her amber eyes.

Midnight began thinking of how likely it'd be for them to win in a fight. They had five warriors while including herself Fire Clan had four warriors and one apprentice. They'd probably win. "We aren't looking for a fight. We haven't crossed your border and you won't cross ours." Midnight said assertively.

"No way! You're way too close to our border. Back. Off."

"You're just as close as we are. How about we both leave and pretend this never happened?"

The Water Clan cats looked at eachother for a moment. "Fine."

Both of the border patrols left eachother. Midnight paused suddenly. She felt a tension that had not left the air. She spun around in time to see Bluebadger leaping at her with unsheathed claws. Midnight quickly side stepped and laughed at him once he hit the ground. "What are you doing, kit?"

Icefang leaped for Midnight and scratched her across the shoulder but she hardly flinched. "You Water Clan cats are acting insane!"

"No! You're clearly planning something!"

The cats broke out into furious battling. Midnight rolled on the ground with Bluebadger until she was holding him down. "Call off your patrol!"

"No! Why would I listen to you?"

"Because I'm right and you're wrong! You and your cats are acting crazy!"

Bluebadger growled and threw Midnight off of him. Bluebadger bit down on Midnight's leg and she hissed in pain. She quickly pulled out of his bite and backed up a few pawsteps. Midnight leaped for Bluebadger and clawed him across the face. This left a long scratch across his muzzle with blood dripping out. He growled and began walking back to his own territory. "Retreat!"

His pitiful group of warriors quickly crossed back to their own land. Midnight looked to her own patrol. "Is everyone okay?"

They all mumbled some kind of response that they were okay and Midnight led them back to camp. Greenberry emerged from his den and his eyes grew wide once he saw the patrol. "What happened?"

"Water Clan happened." Midnight grumbled.

Soon, all of the cats were gathered in the medacine cat den. Lionstar walked in and sat down. Midnight explained in detail what happened. "Those mouse brained badgers!"

"Tell me about it." Whitefeather snapped as Greenberry applied some kind of herb that stung.

"Why would they pick a fight like that?" Midnight mused.

"Oh, that's just Water Clan being Water Clan. Nothing out of the ordinary for a group of warriors to go picking a fight."

"But why? Why should they want to fight with us?"
