It had been a long day for both Damian and Kamiko. The girls had been with them all day, and, as predicted, more in depth questions had been asked. Damian thought that things were going pretty well. We’ve been able to answer all of their questions so far... Maybe they believe us..., he thought.

But, the day was not over yet! Now, the five of them sat around a crackling bonfire on the beach. It was a nice night with a slight breeze. The moon shone big and bright in the sky. The smell of the ocean was thick in the air.

Ivy and Justine were chatting away with Damian, just as they always did. Jenifer remained quiet though. She sat across the bonfire from Kamiko. There was a noticeable smirk on her face as she stared at Kamiko. Now’s a perfect time to go ahead and have a little talk with her, Jenifer thought as she leaned forward a bit.

“Hey, girl. Mind if I ask you a few questions?” Jenifer asked keeping the smirk on her face.

“Sure, go ahead,” Kamiko replied with a small smile.

Damian and the other two stopped talking and looked at them. It was the first time Jenifer had said anything to Kamiko since she introduced herself. Everyone was a little surprised, including Kamiko.

“Well, I was just wondering, I’ve never seen you around before... Where do you live?” Jenifer asked.

“Oh, my family just moved here. We live on the same street as the Trescotts,” Kamiko lied. Wow, I never knew I could come up with a lie that fast before..., Kamiko thought. I’m actually a little proud of myself!

“Why haven’t I seen you at school then? Surely if you live so close to Damian, you’d go to the same school as him, right?”

“Oh, well, I graduated early... You see a skipped a grade and-”

“I don’t care. Where did you used to go to school then?”

Kamiko was silent. Shit, I don’t know the names of any schools! How the hell am I supposed to answer this!?, she thought frantically.

Jenifer snickered a bit. “Okay, how about middle school or elementary school then? Where did you go for them?” Jenifer asked.

Kamiko remained silent. She looked into Jenifer’s eyes. She’s figured it out, hasn’t she? She knows..., Kamiko thought.

“Where did you move from, huh?” Jenifer asked, her smile growing larger and larger with every question Kamiko couldn’t answer.

Silence again.

“Jenifer, I don’t think Kamiko’s comfortable answering all of these questions... She’s never really liked school all that much,” Damian cut in, defending Kamiko.

“Okay, okay... I’ll lay off...” Jenifer said, throwing her hands up. “But, answer me just this one question girl: what’s your last name?”

Kamiko couldn’t force any words out, though she could think of a million common last names. Smith, Jones, Johnson. Come on, say something!, Kamiko told herself. You have to say something, anything! Forget it... It’s been too long now... They know... It’s over...

Kamiko let her head drop. “I don’t have one,” she said miserably, staring at her hands which rested in her lap.

“Oh, you don’t? And why is that? Where are you really from?” Jenifer asked. “You’re just a little piece of trash bottom-feeder, aren’t you?”

Kamiko shot her head up and stared at Jenifer with heat in her eyes. She stood up straight and balled her hands into fists at her side. Never once did she break eye contact with Jenifer who looked genuinely surprised.
