“What are you out here all alone, dear?” Mrs. Trescott asked when she noticed Kamiko leaning against the wall in the hallway outside of the dining room. “Breakfast is ready.”
“I know... I’m just... not that hungry,” Kamiko replied.
“I know you and Damian are fighting, sweetie. Do you want to talk about it?” Mrs. Trescott smiled at Kamiko.
“I meant what I said. I’m sorry, but I really did.”
“That us uppers are all the same?”
“Yeah, but you have to know, Mrs. Trescott, I don’t consider you or Damian or Kai or Alexander uppers. I consider people who are judgmental just because I’m from the bottom-class uppers.”
“I know. You’re not like that, Kamiko. I like you, you know? Damian does too. He doesn’t hate you.”
“It sure seems like he does... He won’t even look at me.”
“Give him time, he’ll come around. I promise.”
“You’re sure?”
“Of course I am. I raised the kid after all.”
“But, he won’t even listen to what I have to say. He ignored me all day yesterday... What if he doesn’t forgive me? What if he really does hate me now?”
“Are you kiddin'? This is Damian we’re talkin' about,” Kai said as he jumped into the conversation he had been listening to from behind Kamiko. “You know what he told me? He yelled at those girls. He actually yelled at them. Can you imagine Damian yelling? Now, that’s something I’d like to see.”
“He yelled at them?” Kamiko asked, mostly to herself.
“Yep. And, he should know you don’t consider him an upper. He should be smarter than that. He’s acting like a dickhead really. I’ll talk to him I guess... Go walk around on the beach or something...”
“Are you sure that’s okay?”
“Of course it is,” Mrs. Trescott said. “It’s our last day here. You should go out and enjoy the beach. Just try not to get lost and don’t be out too late, alright?”
“Yeah, of course,” Kamiko replied with a smile. “Thank you. I’ll go now.”
“Yeah, yeah. Just don’t talk to strangers. Stranger danger, you know? It rhymes so it has to be true,” Kai said. “And, have fun because you need it. You look tired.”
Kamiko walked into the kitchen and opened the fridge. She took out a bottle of water that she had started to drink and took a big swing. The cool liquid refreshed her as it slid down her throat. She put the still unfinished water back in the fridge and turned around.
Her lilac eyes locked with Damian’s hazel ones for a brief second. There was a twist of emotions in Damian’s eyes. He seemed conflicted.
Damian was the first to turn away with an angry huff and turned his gaze to his plate. She said it herself: I’m just the same as the others around here in her eyes, he thought.
Kamiko hung her head and walked out of the sliding glass door. She decided it was best just to leave him be for now. Even though Kai said otherwise, I’m sure he hates me now... Just when I was really starting to like him too! I screw everything up!, she thought as she started to walk away from the house.
Damian looked up when he heard the sliding glass door close.
“Kamiko’s not eating with us?” he asked confused.
“Of course she isn’t, idiot,” Kai huffed. “She thinks you hate her now. Why would she come in here and eat with someone who she thinks hates her?”
