A/N: this is gonna be a mini-one-shot series haha. This starts off when they are younger, just a year off embarking on their journey, but instead of getting a starter Pokemon, because both Steven and Cynthia are in a camp ... they get pokeballs to catch their own !

" But steven lives in Hoenn !! "

Trust me, lovely. Trust me.

When Steven was younger, he lived in the Sinnoh region for a while with his Mother, as his father opened a new business back in the Hoenn region. Steven was one of the more well-off children in his age, and was quite popular due to his fathers status. Not only that, but Steven was also a child who was given a Beldum and an Aron, so he had experience as a trainer some what early, but it wasn't like it was official or anything. After all, everyone here knew that you had to be at least ten to go on a journey. However, people always told Steven that he had such potential, even as a young boy, but he always brushed that off, because he'd much rather be a geologist than a Pokemon Champion, even if everybody thought otherwise.

Someone else who was always told they had superior potential was a younger girl called Cynthia. Cynthia lived in a more humble environment, and lived together with both her parents. Her childhood was fairly normal and fun, however unlike Steven, she did not have a pokemon. People really judged her from how clever and cheeky she was, that's why they always told her she was really something, and they weren't just saying that either.

But if they had one thing in common, it'd probably be the fact that they were both going to attend a summer camp called: " Sinnoh's camp for future champs "

Cynthia was very eager to go, whilst Steven, not so much.

" Mother, must I really go? I've already gotten my pokemon. I can just wait until text year, can't I? All I want to do is some mining .. " he said, some what whining for once, as he was strapped into his car seat. His mother smiled at him kindly, and put a hand on his head.

" Steven, this isn't just about getting new pokemon. In fact, you don't need to. However you need to learn that you can't do things alone, you must make some friends, especially if you're going on a journey. " she explained as she closed the door, getting into the drivers seat.

" Mother, I'm perfectly fine at - " She stopped him.

" Steven, " she repeated sternly. " I will not let you go on any journey of any kind, on your own, whether Professor Rowan, or Professor Birch, tells me otherwise. " she said, and Steven nodded soon after.

Eventually they had arrived, and as Steven looked out the window, he saw a very wide building, but it looked really friendly. Kind of interesting, actually. He got out with his mother, and upon signing a few things, she left, giving her son a kiss on the cheek and a little wave to both him and the person in charge.

The person in charge was a tall man, tanned skinned and a big grin. He wore a white shirt, a khaki, thin jacket and khaki shorts with boots. Steven smiled awkwardly at him.

" Well, come on in, Champ! No need to delay, all the other kids are inside ! " he said, and Steven nodded, following close behind.

Inside the first room, behind the signing-in counter, was a huge play-room, with some pokemon who probably belonged to the staff, and many children playing around. Steven thought it would be loud and hectic, but clearly, these children were as educated as him, as they were peaceful and just play along nicely together. He grew relaxed, as the khaki-man clapped to get everybody's attention.

" Here's the final champ we've been waiting for, everybody! What's your name? Tell them. " He said, leaning down to look at Steven. Steven clutched his pokeballs closely behind his back.

" M-My name is Steven Stone. " he said. " A-And I don't want to be a 'champ'. I want to be a geologist. I want to collect all the rarest fossils and stones in every region. " everybody went awkwardly silent, before Steven smiled and looked up at the Khaki-man. " I also want to make lots of friends. " and with that, everybody grinned and started saying hello.

For the most part, Steven sat outside, on a swing, just looking down at his pokeballs.

" Yeah .. " he thought " .. i really want to let you guys out too, but everybody would give us too much attention. Beldum doesn't really like so much attention. " he said, as he held the pokeball up towards the sun. It gave off a strange gleam. " .. especially because .. " Steven smiled. " I was blessed with the shiniest steel type pokemon out there. " he thought, before being quickly brought back into reality, a girl giggling as she jumped onto the other swing set. Steven jumped and dropped his pokeballs, gasping a bit.

" B-Beldum, Aron ! " he said, quickly scrambling to get them. When he turned around to give the culprit a little glare, he was simply met with a cheeky grin, and a shorter girl standing on the seat of the swing.

" Oh, sorry - Steven, right? " she said. Steven sighed a bit, he couldn't be angry at a girl.

" Yes, Steven. And it's fine. " he said, picking them up, turning to her properly. " What's your name ? " He asked.

She grinned and jumped off, looking up at him.

" Cynthia ! " She said, and shook hands with him enthusiastically. She looked down at his hands, the pokeballs specifically, one in each.

" Weird, you joined this camp with Pokemon ? " She asked, tilting her head. He nodded, offering a smile.

" My goal is to make friends before my journey begins. " He says. She nods with a grin.

" Alright, well, I can be your friend if you like ! " She offered. He blinked at her - was it that easy. He smiled again and nodded.

" Of course, Cynthia. " He agreed.

Steven had made so many friends that day, but the ones who sparked his particular interest was Cynthia, a boy with a Pokemon egg called Riley, and an energetic boy with a shinx, called Volkner.

They had all spent the rest of the day laughed and playing with their Pokemon, and looking after Riley's egg.

Tomorrow was the big day, after all. Many of these trainers-to-be were going to get their first pokemon. Cynthia included.

Steven was planning to help her with that.
