Scarlett's POV

Previously:

Luke's perfect voice rang out, singing the last note softy. By then I was nearly asleep. My breathing slowed even more as Luke carefully picked me up and laid me under the covers of my bed. I was vaguely aware that he kissed my forehead after that, but I was so far gone that I wasn't sure whether I had imagined it or not. It took me only seconds to fall asleep, and this time I dreamed only of Luke's voice.

I awoke to someone softly stroking my cheek, brushing the hair away from my face. My eyes fluttered open to reveal Ashton's concerned face.

"Hey sleepyhead, are you alright? You look like you've been crying," Ashton whispered, lightly touching my cheeks with his fingertips. My face was probably red and blotchy from my episode last night. I blinked a couple of times and slowly sat up, only slightly disoriented.

"Er, yeah, I had a nightmare that kind of got to me last night," I explained, blinking as I remembered Luke comforting me. Ashton's face turned from one of concern to understanding.

"I'm so sorry I wasn't there for you," he spoke, frowning slightly.

"It's okay. How could you have possibly known? And besides, Luke was here--" Ashton cut me off, looking confused.

"Luke was here?" he asked, a slight edge to his voice, and I nodded.

"Yeah, he heard me . . . crying, so he came in here to check on me. I probably woke him up, actually. It's not that big of a deal; nothing I can't handle," I said lightly, not wanting to tell Ashton how badly the dream had bothered me. He didn't need to worry.

"Oh, well, I'm still sorry I wasn't there," Ashton apologized again, and I shook my head smiling at him.

"What are you doing here, anyways? Shouldn't you be in the infirmary?" I asked, changing the subject.

"I just wanted to check on you." Ashton smiled, making me shake my head.

"And you say I'm the overprotective one." I rolled my eyes, unable to hold in my smile. "How are you doing? Is your back feeling any better?" I asked, throwing back the covers and standing up.

"A lot better. The doctors say I should be fully recovered in a couple of weeks."

"That's great news!" I exclaimed.

"Oh here, Luke managed to round up some more clothes for you. They should last you a few days. I set them by the door."

I glanced over and saw the pile, smiling. The thought of being here for any amount of time caused waves of contentment to go coursing through me. "Thanks, I'll get dressed and meet you for breakfast, okay?"

Ashton nodded and went out. It didn't take me long to get changed. I stopped by the bathroom to splash some water on my face and relieve myself before I met back up with Ashton. The room was bustling with people. I quickly spotted Ashton. He had already grabbed us two plates and was digging in. I shook my head and walked over, noticing Luke and Calum sitting with him. I took my seat, greeting everyone before I dug into my eggs. I couldn't believe they had chickens here, but Luke reassured me that they were fairly easy to keep, if not a little messy. I found it slightly harder to look Luke in the eyes after my breakdown last night, but he seemed unfazed and didn't mention it, for which I was grateful. Once we were all finished, Luke and Calum started telling us about how things were run here.

"Everyone that can has to contribute. We have a rotational chore system, and we'll fit you in soon. There's kitchen duty, cleaning crew, hunting party, which you're both exempt from for now, laundry, and a few more. For now though, I think you guys can start with teaching some of the older kids how to shoot a bow," Luke explained, making me nod enthusiastically.
