Deaf Dreamers

I know you fall asleep
to the sound of my breathing.
And when my heartbeat slows,
you'll know that I'm dreaming
sweet dreams about you
and I in the future
when they don't try to change us.

I wake with your face nestled into the crook of my neck,
and there is no other person
I'd rather be with
in this moment,
we're infinite.

If you take my word for it,
we'll be okay.
We are deaf dreamers in the light of day.
Tuning out is a skill we've developed
from countless hours of blowups
and lectures for change.
But in this little place we've made for ourselves
we're out of range
and their voices just fade.
