this is such a disgusting paper but I got 100% wtf
What surprised you most about the book? I read the book Wintergirls and there were many things that surprised me about this book but I will try to stay on one or two. This book was about a girl named Lia who has dealt with her parents divorcing, constant arguments with her parents and stepmother, getting into a big fight with her best friend Cassie, and biggest of all anorexia. When Cassie and Lia are nineteen Cassie passes away as she also suffers from an eating disorder, bulimia. After Cassie passes away Lia's mother, father, and stepmother all agree that Lia should visit her shrink, Dr. Parker to deal with the loss. Since Lia is dealing with anorexia she has these terrible thoughts about herself throughout the book calling herself fat, stupid, ugly, etc. A while back in Lia's past she was admitted to a "prison" called New Seasons they specialize with people with eating disorders. While Lia feels that loss while dealing with anorexia she also has the ghost of Cassie coming around every once in a while telling Lia to end her life telling her she doesn't have to feel the pain and can end it. Lia also blames herself for Cassie's death because Cassie called Lia thirty-three times the night she died, and Lia did not pick up because they were in the middle of a fight.
The thing that surprised me the most about this book was the sensitive and emotional topics that are such key factors in the story such as anorexia, bulimia, self-harm, suicide, and divorce. The anorexia in this book is the eating disorder that Lia deals with she basically starves herself until she gets to her wanted weight. The bulimia in this book is the eating disorder that Cassie deals with and dies from basically she would eat as much food as she wants to then would shove most likely her finger down her throat to make herself throw up what she had just eaten. The self-harm in this story is somewhere in this book Lia talks about cutting herself it get so bad she is almost killed of blood loss and dehydration. The suicide in this story has two portions Cassie basically destroys her insides by forcing herself to puke, and Lia almost commits suicide by cutting herself and starving herself. The divorce is Lia's birth parents Chloe and David split up after David was having affairs with women the last one just so happened to be Lia's stepmother Jennifer as Lia puts it "they were married before I was used to my parents being divorced." I greatly admire the author Laurie Halse Anderson for being so courageous and writing such an amazing book. That is what surprised me most about the book Wintergirls.
