Chapter 1

It's the adrenaline you feel, the control you have. It's an addiction with no cure. It is surgery. The scalpel in my hand, steady but paced with urgency; this is what I live for.

"Dr. Bates, They need you in O.R. 1." The nurse inquires.

"Yeah, well tell them Mr. Stevenson here needs me, surely, just as much." I huff out handing the 10 blade over to the surgical technologist. "I'm done, close him up."

I slink out of the room. Hawthorne Hospital, the second highest ranked hospital called me over to perform a Pericadiectomy, and I don't even get the chance to admire my handy work. After washing my hands, I head down from O.R. room 5 to room 1.

Holding a mask up over my mouth I ask, "What do you need, Dr. Cross?"

His back is to me, I notice his broad shoulders and staggering height of possibly 6 foot 3 inches, looking up a little bit more I notice beach blonde hair coming out of the bottom of his cap. He doesn't move.

"Dr. Cross?" I ask a little more quietly.

He turns to me slowly, eyeing me up and down with his vivid hazel eyes, clearly taking in the sight of my midnight black scrubs and cap. I stand there unnerved. "I must speak to you in the conference room after I'm done here. Give me 5 minutes." He states then turns without another word.

I head out to the locker rooms to change into my lab coat to look more professional. Why would the Chief of Surgery want to see me? Did I miss file Mr. Stevenson's documentations? I bite my bottom lip, throwing off my cap and pulling my lab coat over my scrubs, I rush out of the room.

I walk up to the conference room, pull my black wavy hair out of its tight bun and let it fall down to my mid back. Running a shaky hand through it, I knock on the door.

"Come in." A feminine voice states.

I open the door to find a petite red-head wearing a business suit, 6 inch heels and librarian glasses. Any guys dream.

"Is Dr. Cross here? I may have the wrong room." I say, unable to look her in her perfect green eyes.

"No, I am from human resources. He is not here yet Olivia, please take a seat and I am sure he will be with us in a moment." She says my name completely mono toned.

I panic, running through all the pre-operative procedures for Mr. Stevenson's case in my head, counting on my fingers to make sure I got everything done and correctly. I feel her staring at me, and I peek up noticing she has a perplexed face on and immediately stop. Just as I give her a light smile the door slams open revealing Dr. Cross. I am taken back, he is not just broad, but built. That blonde hair peeking through earlier served no justice to the disheveled blonde hair I see now. His muscles on show since he is only wearing Hawthorne's standard surgeons navy blue scrubs. I look up at his eyes as he sits at the head of the table, and those icy hazel eyes hide nothing, if his face didn't already have on a completely lets get this done and over with expression, you would be able to tell because his eyes are glazed over with boredom.

"Dr. Bates, I have a problem." He begins to state. Looking down at a piece of paper.

I jump in before he says anymore, "I swear I did the paper work myself, if there is any problem. It is with your staff."

He looks up at me now, those eyes now focused and says, "In fact, the problem is with my staff."

I continue to look at him confused.

"Dr. Bates, we here at Hawthorne need your expertise, I would like to offer you a position with us as the head of Cardio Surgery." He says still looking at me blankly.

I am stunned. "Of.. course Mr..uh..Dr. Dr. Cross. I uh.."

"Please Bates, sit back down. You and Heidi must discuss your attending position." He says clearly fighting back a smirk. Cross gets up and leaves the room. How dare he just assume I will give up my life in Texas and move here to Illinois. Even if this is the second best hospital...he is still rude. I blush though, not even realizing I stood up and... oh gosh all that stuttering. I sat back down and discussed with the model known as Heidi for and hour.

My pager is going off with its deafening alarm telling me I need to get up now. It's 2 am and I am getting my shoes on quickly in the on-call room. It has been 8 hours since I signed the contract and it has been only 3 hours of sleep. I look at my pager, it blinks the codes saying I have to head to the E.R for a major emergency.

I get to the room. Red everywhere, screams in the air, moans of discontent. I get to work. Doctors are everywhere scattering about.

"Dr. Bates, your needed in room 301 A." I hear a deep voice say.

While turning to the unknown voice I say, "Thank you, Dr.." I stop. Piercing blue eyes now holding me.

"Sorry Dr. Bates, I'm RN Kingsly. Nice to meet you. Now if you will follow me.." He says slightly turning his bodying urging me to follow him. I take a second though, he has dirty brown hair, I notice, with perfectly toned arms and I am almost sure I see a tattoo peeking out from underneath his right sleeve. I hear a quiet cough and look up to see a childish smile on his face. I compose myself and try to take the heat out of my cheeks.

Smoothing my shirt, turning my gaze away from him I say, "Lead the way."
