The dream

It was around 2 in the afternoon the next day when Jyn was sitting in her room, at her new foster home. The family which had taken her in seemed normal enough, and seemed to be kind to her. But they were also extremely strict. They had told her that she needed to be home for dinner by 6, and call if for any unplanned reason she would be late. She couldn't go out after dinner on a school night, and even on the weekends she had to be back by 10. And they had already checked at least once if she was actually doing her homework, as she said she would. She sighed. When she lived with Saw, the only rule was to be home for the night, and if not, call. He never checked on her homework, and he didn't care what time she was back. She had always known that his behavior wasn't particularly responsible, but these people were taking it way too far. It was going to take her quite some time to get used to it.

Over the next few weeks Jyn tried to get used to her new home, but was getting more and more annoyed with her foster parents' rules. Twice already Cassian had asked her out, and their rules had ruined it all. The first time he asked her, they didn't let her go, because she had a test the next Monday, so she shouldn't spend her Friday night going out. The second time they did let her go, but they called once an hour to check if she was okay. It made Jyn furious. They had met Cassian, they knew he was a good guy, so why was there a need to check in every hour. With all their rules she barely ever got to see Cassian, other than in their lunch breaks. So they had decided to do homework together on Tuesday afternoons, at Cassian's house. Sure, they weren't completely alone, and had to stay in the house, because Cassian had to babysit Carmen, but it was better than nothing. And at least there was no one there trying to keep them at least an arm's length away from one another.

'I'm going crazy in that place, Cass. I'm serious.'

Cassian looked up from his notebook and looked at her with a sympathetic smile. Jyn had been more annoyed and unhappy lately, and it was starting to frustrate him that her foster family couldn't see it. Yes, Jyn might not have had the most stable upbringing, and he could understand why they wanted to make sure she wouldn't go off and do crazy things. But she had been with them for nearly a month now, and they still didn't seem to trust her. She no longer felt like she was living in a foster home, but like she was living in a prison. He took her hand in his and gently rubbed his thumb over her skin.

'I know. I wish I could help you...'

Jyn moved over and hugged him. 'Don't leave me. Right now you're all I got to keep me from going completely mental. You're the only one I feel I can really trust, and who actually cares about me.'

He rubbed her back as he held her, hoping it would calm her down.

'I'll be here for you, Jyn. No matter what happens, I will be here for you.'

She let go of him a little bit so that she could look him in the eyes. 'Promise?'

He smiled slightly. 'I promise.'

Little did either of them know, it wouldn't take long for Cassian to prove his promise.

Cassian hated thunder storms with a deep passion. They reminded him of the night his parents died, and when he was little, he often thought that the thunders were gun shots. Even now at 17, he wasn't safe from the nightmares.

After coming home from the foster center that afternoon, he helped Maria out with dinner and played with Carmen for an hour before going to bed early. As he slept, a terrible storm moved in, and even as he wasn't consciously aware of the storm, it had already given him nightmares. He woke up with a short yell, and sat up in his bed, his shirt clinging to his chest, as he tried to calm his breathing. He rubbed his hand over his face and heard the door to his room open slightly.

'Are you okay, Cassian?' Maria's voice filled his room.

He sighed. 'Yeah, just a nightmare. Don't worry about it.'

'Okay.' The door softly closed again.

Cassian was used to having nightmares about his parents' death, but this nightmare was different. Somewhere halfway through the dream it had shifted from the apartment where his parents died, to Jyn's new foster home. In his dream he walked up the stairs as he heard yelling coming from behind one of the doors. He continued up the stairs and opened the door to Jyn's room. Inside the room, Jyn laid on her bed, covered in bruises, a knife in her chest, everything covered in blood. He had woken up as he heard someone behind him.

It made him uneasy not knowing why he had hadthe nightmare, or what the reason for it was. Could Jyn be in danger? It wasn'tlikely. The neighborhood was quite safe, and although her foster parents werestrict, neither of them seemed to be aggressive. He took a deep breath andtried to push the dream away, hoping to get some more sleep.
