'Jyn!'

Jyn turned around as she heard someone call out her name from across the hall. Finally her eyes found Bodhi and Kay running down the hall and stopped by her locker.

'You look horrible.' Kay stated dryly, earning him a slap against the arm from Bodhi.

'Gee, thanks Kay.' She answered.

'Is it true?' he asked. 'Did you foster dad abuse you, and stabbed Cassian?'

She nodded, unable to really talk about it.

Bodhi ran his hands through his hair. 'Jesus.'

'Is he okay?' Kay asked, and for the first time since Jyn met him, she actually notice concern in his voice.

'He's still in the hospital, but the doctors say he'll be okay.' She looked down at her feet. 'I'm really sorry, guys. It's all my fault. I called Cass when Draven came for me... I'm sorry...'

Kay opened his mouth, about to agree with her, but Bodhi put his hand over Kay's mouth before he could say anything.

'Don't blame yourself, Jyn. I once had an alcoholic foster dad, they're unpredictable. They hurt even the people they say they love. No one can blame you for being scared. It's not your fault Cass got hurt.'

Jyn looked up at Bodhi with a smile and hugged him. 'Thanks Bodhi.'

'So... what happens now? Are you going back to the center?' Kay asked.

Jyn and Bodhi let go of one another, and immediately Jyn's shoulder slummed again. 'Yeah... but that doesn't matter right now. I'm going to see Cassian this afternoon, you guys wanna come along?'

'Oh, that's not even a question, of course we're coming.' Bodhi said, making Jyn laugh.

When they walked into Cassian's room in the hospital that afternoon, Cassian was sitting up in his bed, looking much less pale than the day before. Most of his face was now visibly covered in bruises, but he seemed okay. When his eyes fell upon his friends in the doorway, his face lit up.

'Hey guys!' He said.

'Cass!' Jyn ran towards him and embraced him in a hug.

Cassian did his best to hide the groans of pain coming up.

'Jyn, you are hurting Cassian, let go.' Kay stated, and it wasn't a request. It was an order.

Jyn quickly let go, feeling bad. 'Are you okay?' she asked, the feeling of guilt still obvious in her eyes.

Cassian smiled. 'I'm okay, don't worry.'

'Dude, you're in the hospital after getting stabbed. I'm not sure "Don't worry" applies here.' Bodhi said, making them all laugh.

'Well, it could have been worse. And the doctor says I'll be allowed to go home in a few days. So don't worry too much.' He smiled. He was still hurting, but a weight had been lifted off his shoulders, and he chose to focus on that, instead of the pain.

'I sure hope our lives will go back to being the boring mess they were before...' Kay stated dryly.

'Definitely.' Bodhi said.

'So what's going to happen to you?' Cassian turned his attention towards Jyn. 'Are you going back to the center?'

She nodded again. 'I don't have anywhere else to go. It's not like there's families lining up to adopt or even foster a girl who is 16, and was just somewhat involved in an arrest.

Cassian squeezed her hand slightly and smiled at her. 'I'm sure we'll figure out something.'

It took about 3 more days before the doctors allowed Cassian to go home, and it would be at least another week before he was cleared to go to school again. He was still easily tired and out of breath. And Cassian knew it would be a long time before he would ever be able to run again like he did before. But his grades were still good, so he hoped that even if he wouldn't make the track team in his senior year, he would still be able to go to college.

About 2 weeks after Cassian was released from the hospital, it was Jyn's 17th birthday. Since birthday parties at the center always sucked, Cassian and Bodhi could speak from experience, they decided to hold a party for Jyn at Cassian's house. It wasn't a very big party, considering Jyn hadn't put much effort into making friends yet, but the people she did care about where there. There was cake, and even some gifts, which quite surprised her. They were little things mostly; Carmen gave her a handmade bracelet, which Jyn would never wear. Cassian had bought her two tickets to an amusement park, promising they'd go once he was recovered. Kay hadn't really known what to get her, so he had just given her an envelope with cash and told her to pick something out herself. This, of course, earned him a round of laughter. But the best gift came from Bodhi, and his dads. Over the past few weeks she had spent quite a lot of time at Bodhi's and had gotten to meet his dads. They were somewhat strange, but extremely kind and funny, and had always managed to make her smile.

On her 17th birthday, however, they made her cry. The big envelope they had given her wasn't filled with cash like she had somewhat expected after Kay's gift. Within the envelope were adoption papers, only still to be signed by the director of the Center. And Jyn couldn't help but cry of happiness.

She was finally getting adopted. She wouldfinally have a real family again. And she knew, from that moment on, that thiswould not only be the best birthday that she could ever have. But that this wasthe best gift she would receive in her entire life.
